I just completed the last Night Elf rare. Got all the fossil ones. So 80% of my time will be spent trying to get some dig sites in Uldum and that is ALOT of time.

Yup, you've hit on the fundamentally broken part of archaeology. So far they've given zero feedback on it, and little indication that they plan on fixing.

I got arch to 50 yesterday and it was painfully miserable. I don't know how some of my guildies have managed to stick with it. The lure of boa epics that don't scale and will be less useful with the first content patch isn't enough.
I'd rather do anything else and if I was so bored with stuff that I was considering arch I'd log off instead.
I guess it should be time consuming (it surely isn't difficult, just momentally boring and time consuming) due to the numerous rewards. IMO there are too many good rewards from it (for current content) regardless of mindless time involved, and it's too mind numbingly boring.
Presently I question the intellect of people who are devoting days to maxing it out.

I grinded it out to 525, wasn't worth it so far. I don't even understand the reason for half of the BoA epics, as they are useless without scaling.
What the OP talks about is the worst aspect of it. You get all the items from one race and then you are still forced into digs for said race.
At least half of my digs are fossils and they server no purpose after both raptors. 
One of the only other pluses is that it is a good source of experience if you can handle the monotony. I had a guildy get from 80 to almost 84 from skilling it up 1-525.

I got to 525 with 1200+ troll fragments. No sword. Dropped it and wanted to buy the 3 days spent back. Got a bunch of crappy blue things that are useless, a pet and a mount.

The reason 99.999999% of the completions you get are grey is so when you get a non scaling epic item that's only useful for 2 of your already maxed out characters it will feel super awesome.
Duh.

You can get a 2nd hearthstone - on the same cool down as the first so you can waste 1 bag slot and choose which one to click each hour.  (is there any use for that thing anyone has found?)

Beats the hell out of fishing that is one thing for sure. Getting fishing past 100 really takes dedication or a bot doing it for you. Pretty sure most people above 100 uses a bot to fish. Nobody could be that crazy to actually sit and watch the the hook for hours.

hours? YOu can get to 100 in 15 minutes. However I'm using the fishing dailies to finish my max out.
As for Archeology..I'm using it on my DK before hitting outland...at this rate he'll be 65 before he even sees the portal. One bonus is that you get to mine in the areas you are looking for this 'junk'. So JC/mining/Arch are doing fine.

that comic was great. i think the way fishing and archaeology work are both retarded. i do not understand how anyone can have fun doing those repeated mundane tasks over and over hundreds or thousands of times. i think people just do it because its there and they want to max everything out. the world pvp was the only good thing about archaeology when i tried it out a bit...but i can get more world pvp action just by going to a hotspot.

I have to agree that pretty much everyone uses a bot for fishing. There are plenty of them available that are undetectable by Warden.

I'm the one who's maxed fishing on 2 chars to 525 skill, both with Salty achieve & all fishing achieves done except for those 2 new rare fish achieves. And 3rd char is at 410+ skill, over halfway done with fishing achieves...
and I never botted it.
I love being crazy.

I've leveled up fishing a couple of times, and I have never used a bot in WoW.
The key is you have to have fishing buddy so you can double click to cast and auto loot when you use the bobber.
Then you have to have a TV in the room that you can watch, and turn the fishing sounds up so you can react.
It's so god awful I have no idea why I've done it... especially more than once.
I really should see if I can get a bot ...

I enjoy fishing. I've never used a bot nor fishing buddy and have made quite a bit of gold from it. It's relaxing.
I wasn't interested in archeology at all, but now that I know that's where you get the Vial of Sands, I've taken it up.

If your in queue on your dps it is a useful time killer. Fishing is more profitable.
The lack of Uldum dig sites does bug me, since 450+ I have been exclusively on that continent and have finished one common item
