Subject: i'm looking to get a new camera after i get my taxes back, i'll have about a 1k budget
i have Canon A650 which is ok but painfully slow (i miss way too many great moments of my granddaughters because of that) and noisy in most anything lower than great light

i'm not going to ever get a bunch of lenses or accessories so i'm not limited to Canon and Nikon for those reasons

i do use the articulated screen on the A650 quite a bit so i would miss that feature a lot

i've read every review on over 10 websites i've been tracking for several years now (i used to build cameras and love keeping up with the technology)

i'm also no pro nor do i ever plan on being one

2 that i'm thinking of are the Sony SLT-A55 and the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF2

any input would be much appreciated

since you say you are not going pro, or thinking about it, my suggestion of buying a good used Canon 5D is out of the question...

how about the new Canon 60D? it has the movable screen too, and canon added video to it. The body is around $1k

I currently use a 50D and thinking about picking up a 40D for a spare/backup or leaving the wife the 50D and me having the 40D when I travel.

btw, I am Canon biased, incase you didnt pick that up...lol

One of my friends bought the Sony, and loves it more than he loves chocolate / his kids / pancakes / the sun.

Great camera. The AF on it is bomber. Thats my quick suggestion out of those two, I like it. A lot.

i had a 40d and loved it but had to sell it at the time, the 60d would be great but the 1k is pretty much the limit and i sold my lenses with the 40d body so it wouldn't work

i appreciate the idea though

i'm leaning towards the Sony as well now

Buy a nikon d3100 / d5000 and a cheap 50mm (f1.8)

That's all you need and you'll have excellent image quality. happy

good choices but i prefer the higher res screen rotating screen and better high iso over the 3100 and better screen and better movie mode (ie not just 5 min) over the 5000

i'd probably really only consider Canon or Nikon if i were planning on getting a lot of different lenses and accessories but Sony has plenty for my use
