Either how-to's on technical fundamentals or just photo books with great examples...

I was bought "The Digital Photography Handbook" when I first got my DSLR and found it pretty helpful, but it's not hugely technical, kinda more of a dslr for dummies. It does explain everything in nice simple terms though.

ISBN 978-1-84724-445-1

Ditto on Kelby. My local costco has versions 1-3 of his Digital Photography book and they are excellent, they pack a ton of good info into a pretty tiny book.

I was looking at his: my only concern is they don't seem to be as technical as I would like. Might still be a solid base to build an understanding from though...

Kelby's books are good for the novice. Once you're over that first hump and know a little bit more what you're doing though, they rapidly lose value.

I really liked them though. They were the first books I read about photography (1 & 2, 3 came out alot later) But I think having just the first one is enough. There is alot of overlapping in the second one.

That beeing said, I don't even bother with them for referance anymore. :/

I cuddle myself asleep reading the Hot Shoe Diaries by McNally, and Within the Frame by David duChemin.

His writing style inspires me. I have woken up on countless beaches, mountain sides, and in strange hostels / peoples houses around the world this past year with one of his books fallen out of my hand.
