Subject: So, what role do you like to play in groups?
I know, some of you may not group ever because grouping is for losers, but for those of you that do, what role do you typically like to play?

I'm an altoholic, so I like to play several classes, partly to learn how the class works, but mostly to keep gameplay varied, since a mage plays differently from a warrior.

Usually I like to tank, because it's normally the easiest role overall. Some groups I've run with are obsessed with high DPS, which is understandable to a point (which helps explain why Blizzard keeps making instances so that only cookie-cutter high DPS specs are viable even though they try to say otherwise), but as a tank, your only job is to worry about making sure the mobs beat on you instead of your group. I seem to enjoy tanking on my paladin the most, since they have the most tools to play with as far as holding aggro on multiple mobs and can self-heal if needed.

I suppose healing is my least liked role. I can perform it, but I'm not terribly good at healing multiple peeps getting hurt at once. And if the tank is really good, then playing a healer is boring because you don't have much to do either lol, but that's not always a bad thing.

So what do you usually like to play, and why?

Right now I prefer tanking. When pugging I rather remove the biggest wild card, which is the tank, because if the tank sucks, the group fails, more so than if the healer sucks. At least as a pally tank I can help heal myself when I'm stuck with a bad healer, and have plenty of cooldowns to keep myself alive.

When things finally start to settle down and people learn their jobs, I'll likely go back to DPS. Assuming of course Blizzard gets their heads out of their asses and realizes that there is something wrong with Ret.

Whatever my guild needs. Tank, Healer, DPS, chief cook or bottle washer...

Seriously, I'm an ""off-tank."" Hands down. Doesn't matter whether I'm melee, or ranged DPS, or as I infamously embarrassed myself once saying on the board "off-tanking" with a frost mage... This is my favorite style of play. I love bringing utility, cc or caster killing to a group as well as providing an easier job for the main tank and healer (whether group or raid.)

I think like a tank, and love straight-up all out, in-your-face damage and understand what it's like to be a healer.

With both a DK and Prot Pally, I've got 2 types of tanks and 2 types of DPS, depending on what is needed. I've group and raid tanked. Been both main and off-tank.

So yeah, when I'm not tanking or healing. Or 2-boxing. I'm doing this.

Probably got the bug when I played a Board and Sword Champ as a noob in DAoC, back in RvR days when I provided protection for the raid leader working the ram. That was before I figured out I could take down pallies standing in my face with a void eldie. And before Lurikeen heros arrived. wink

In PuGs, I usually end up playing a DPS hybrid that picks up the slack in healing. Go figure.

I know "off-tank" isn't one of the major "roles". It's what I am.

PS: for the sake of the thread, I will say: if I end up back in PuGs again (which I probably will), you can bet, I will bring either my druid or pally as DPS with an ability to backup heal. I've learned, that's the best all around contribution I can make to a PuG (outside of tanking)... somebody sitting in the back (or up front) keeping an extra eye on on mobs and everyone's health bars, including the healer.

Eh? I haven't raided in Cata yet so you'll have to elaborate if that's where they suck. Whenever I'm playing as Ret though I'm usually 1st or 2nd on the dps list in normal and heroic dungeons.

Edit: Oh and to answer the OP, I prefer playing a healer.

Druid healing is very broken right now in case you didn't know.

I'm the dpser who wants to tank...

Luckily I make up for that annoying trait by taking the lead and telling everyone what to do...

TANK!! Sprawl, your kind of role makes me nuts. If a dps starts acting like a tank I stop tanking and let them die. Sometimes it takes a few times before they get it. Since I usually run with a pocket healer who knows what I'm doing they die fast. grin Really fast!

Lately I've wanted to play a mindless dps. That way I jsut jsut go pew pew pew and have no one seriously depending on me for the success of the group. As long as I don't screw up, I can just follow along instead of leading. It's nice change of pace from my normal "I'm the tank that's why. Now shut up and follow kill order" mind set.

Ultimately I love healing, But being in a guild that is mostly east coasters while I am one of a couple west coasters... I generally PUG. Needless to say with the recent way of healing....I am leveling my mage more than anything currently.

Haha, I jokingly play that role at times when we killing trash, although the guild will attest that I main tanked a full Karazhan run back as a Combat Rogue in a full 101% dodge suit, before dodge was nerfed...

I've not seen it either. We've got 2 druid healers in our core group and they seem to have no trouble.

Agreed. I've rarely run into bad druid healers, especially in my guild raid group where we have 2 of them as well. From time to time it happens, but almost always in LFD runs with baddie druid healers. The rest of the time the druids that know what they are doing only go OOM when something goes drastically wrong, like broken CC or DPS that like to pull.

As for the poster earlier who said he's usually the top dps of his group as a ret paladin... if that's the case, the rest of your group sucks. Ret is far too reliant on random procs. Sure, sometimes ret pallies can do stupid crazy dps when the stars and planets align. But that doesn't happen often. It's gone back to the days of waiting for Command procs, but now it just uses more buttons.

I used to love healing until they made it so I run OOM every fight because efficiency is out the door now.

Efficient heals don't keep anyone up and you have to spam your 6-7k mana ones -.-

Our druid healer has a lot of trouble in heroics. Always running out of mana, heals not healing for enough, etc. It got to the point where she quit playing the druid and switched over to her disc priest.

Healing in a raid setting and healing in a heroic are two entirely different situations. In a raid setting other healers are able to cover any weak points you may have with your class. In a heroic you are the only healer there and if you are simply unable to cast large enough heals to heal everyone you are pretty screwed.

Regarding Ret, far too reliant on procs? Shoot I'm usually waiting on my GCD to use a proc that triggered after already using it a half a second ago. Perhaps you aren't making full use of your zealotry and inquisition? Maybe it's the fact that my group didn't suck but you suck at the new way of playing Ret?

The role I enjoy in groups = anything that doesn't involve "leading."
I play the leader all day long at work. When I come home I like to turn off that part of me and follow the crowd. Generally I gravitate towards DPS classes. I pride myself in taking random classes and topping the raid meters with them. I find you can top the meters just by putting effort into learning the class. It has become obvious to me over the years that only a select few people put in that same effort.

My first choice is caster DPS. I prefer my warlock or mage. Don't know why, I have just always preferred caster types in MMO's all the way back to the days of my OG mage in AC. I really started liking my resto druid though. I had never played a healer before and it is a lot more fun than I expected.

I like to play them all. Mastering each role makes me better at all the others.

Tanking, healing, or DPS can all be fun depending on the current mechanics and class abilities.

I enjoy tanking, but I don't like leading, and I don't like having to depend on others to heal me, so I generally end up playing DPS classes.

I'm currently leveling a shaman however, and although I'm solo questing as enhancement, at 30 I'll dual spec to heal for instances. I'm generally good at healing in other games, I've never tried it in WoW though.

I did like tanking in WoTLK. I'm not enjoying it much anymore. Some healers have no problems while others really struggle to keep me up. I start feeling guilty or stressed at how poorly those runs go and fall back into my stress-free dps role next run. Queue as tank is nice but I don't enjoy it. It feels like work.

All, really. I prefer DPS as I level and LFD prior to heroics, with a bit of healing. Once I'm dedicated to instance running I tend to go tank. If I raid at all it's whatever character with the appropriate spec and gear I get up first. In Wrath I healed a whole lot.

About ret, I have two friends in raiding guilds and they get by just fine. I still top meters in random 80+ instances on mine. The changes seem really beneficial. Maybe it's just pre heroics and my friends are mad crazy hardcore good, but ret pal lies still seem better off than most classes. IMO.

Hmmm, I switched from my disc priest to the druid to heal as we were leveling. Sounds like the same concerns from priests. Thanks for the heads up. Looks like I need to collect more data for myself and for the guild, (not doubting your statement). My guess is we will end up using a shaman through heroics again, which frees me up to play my DK for the most part, which is the class everyone wants me playing... however, I am skeptical about that as well. We've rerun instances with me on my frost DK and my hubby healing on his priest (and he's finding mana an issue as he gets higher in levels). My DK works just fine through regulars, but once again, those aren't heroics.

I think we're gonna end up leveling a couple of extra alts each until we get a group combo that works again.

That should keep us "busy" for a bit. tongue

I tanked the last dragon boss in Ramparts on my Rogue after the real tank died, lol. I just kept running behind him and hitting him in the ass while avoiding fire breath and let the casters kill him. How the mage didn't pull aggro from me remains a mystery happy .

That should keep us "busy" for a bit. tongue

It could always just be the aches and pains of learning a new way of healing of course, but she's a good healer and has played a resto druid for a long time now which makes it hard for me to believe they aren't broke as hell. She can heal heroics with very little troubles on her disc priest and that is with less mana regen.

On a brighter note, I'm really liking how holy paladins turned out at 85 my self. The change nerfed me really hard at 80 but when you get to 85 and decently geared they really shine.

Holy pali's are still somewhat of a bitch. But I guess I am doing good. Finally did a heroic on mine and was able to get 3 guildies together for it. We had the tank, me healing and 2 dps, 3rd was a pugger. We did Tolvar. Through most of it I was okay, since I have mostly learned all the tricks for mana management. But in the end when it came down to Siamat, had the group not been 3 pali's, a druid, and a shadow priest... there would be no way in hell I would have been able to heal that alone. As is everyone had to add in some healing, and we even lost 2 dps on the fight.

That fight there is simply just way too much AOE damage for a single paly with no HoT's to heal through. I call that bad design.

I did get kudos from everyone, even the pugger, which was quite nice. (Was actually my first run ever with guildies as they are east coasters and I am a west coaster. They were up late and were gonna log tell I told em I was gonna heal my first heroic.)

I've healed through every heroic 5-man dungeon without any major issues, assuming people don't stand in the proverbial fire and all the appropriate adds are killed and interrupts are performed. Sure it's not easy but with proper use of all, and I mean all, skills you should be perfectly capable of keeping your entire group alive through every fight as a holy paladin.

From what I've been hearing HoTs aren't even worth the mana they cost to cast without an insane amount of haste.

I don't know what Siamat's AoE damage range is... but 4 of us are melee and he was still hitting the shadow priest at range.

My gear level was 329, 330 now. I don't know if you are well over my gear, so it helps... but I see no way a single pali can do it from my run last night.

Since WotLK's release, when I main-switched from rogue to priest, I have been playing healer as my primary role, and I definitely enjoy that the most. I enjoy a bit of DPS from time to time, but healing is where I feel that I'm really important, not just one of the team.

I've tried tanking, not gotten good at it, and found it too frustrating when you're not good at it to perservere, so far.

p.s. despite all the negativity, I would have to see that healing in Cataclysm at present is the most fun it has been in all my experience.

My current ilvl is 347 but I was doing Lost City when I had a lower rating, of course it was a lot more challenging then. I don't mind giving advice if you want it.

At least it's not just me. I haven't played in a year, so some of it is probably me being really rusty and adjusting to all the changes... but I don't like healing with my druid at all now.

Lately I've enjoyed playing the healer because I enjoy letting people die in purpose just for my own amusement. For instance in my last run I let this ret pally with laughable dps (lol poor ret gimps) die over and over again just so I can bring out Jeeves for repair because I haven't used him in a while. Ahhhhhhh I love having the ability to feel like a God because I control whether someone in my group lives or die because of my healing.

I tried all possible roles, and I always came back to tank. It's the most involved role for me, you have to pay attention at all times, and not just faceroll your keyboard to top the meters.
I've been DPS (hunter) a long time up to and including raid content, and you'd have to pay me well to go back to that and give up my tank.

Well my very first bit of advice is to cast your Judgement as much as you possibly can. Not only does it give you mana back but it will also, if you have the correct talent, heal yourself and the tank at the same time through beacon.

Next up, get your in combat mana regen above 2500. Mine is sitting around 2800 right now when I eat 60 spirit food and pop a spirit elixir and I'm only now getting to the point where I can be a little overboard with my divine light heal. I also suggest working towards getting haste and spirit on every single piece of gear, it'll make a difference. Mastery is just barely better than crit imo.

This takes me into your spell selection. You probably already know this but holy shock is something you should be casting every single time it's off of cooldown. I usually opt to always cast it on a DPS that needs a heal, usually the one with the lowest health unless I can see they will be safe for at least a few seconds. Between that and word of glory you can keep the DPS healed in damn near every heroic boss fight. Also, holy light is something you need to learn to get comfortable casting in high pressure situations. You may feel like you need to top that DPS who's at half health off with a divine light but in most situations all you end up doing is wasting mana. And of course divine light on the tank when he needs a direct heal. Holy radiance has become very useful to me now that I've gotten used to it. It may be situational but the healing output is pretty nice if you use it correctly.

Be sure and use your cooldowns liberally and I also suggest selecting trinkets with some type of mana regen proc or use ability. Hand of Sacrifice should be something you know when to cast on the tank because he's going to need it more often than you may be used to. Also don't forget to use your divine protection since the 40 second cooldown means it will be back up fast.

Last but not least, I find flash of light to be damn near worthless. I have yet to be in a situation where I thought flash of light would work better than divine light.

A lot of good advice there. the best of it for me was the combat regen. I hadn't thought about my spirit levels and when I looked, I was at 1700 combat regen. After some retooling and an upgrade in my trinket spot after the last run, I am sitting at 2300 combat regen. That made a huge difference.

I also use Holy Shock every chance it's up, I just wish there was a way to get daybreak to proc more :P

Flash of light has been off all my bars since mid 60's :P

One thing I do differently, and it's something I have done from the start, so not sure I can change because I am set in my ways on that.... is I beacon of light an off-tank/dps. That is the closest I can get to having a HoT on a pali. Since most of the time you are spamming heals on the tank, it's a good way to keep a second person up. So one heal will heal the tank, me the healer, and 1 dps.

About ret, I have two friends in raiding guilds and they get by just fine. I still top meters in random 80+ instances on mine. The changes seem really beneficial. Maybe it's just pre heroics and my friends are mad crazy hardcore good, but ret pal lies still seem better off than most classes. IMO.

Ret does okay at the higher gear levels from what I've seen and kept an eye on. It's heroic and pre-heroic that's difficult right now. For example, I struggle to pull off 4k DPS on trash or on boss fights where you change targets every 10-20 seconds. A perfect rotation and I can get 7k DPS on a boss. If everything procs just right I'll pull between 8k and 10k DPS. That's a wide range of what kind of DPS I can do depending on the situation. And for such a strict rotation, it's really really random. The buffs should help both problems a little bit.

Cataclysm changed the way beacon works too drastically to cling to the old way of things. The ability to build your holy power by healing the beacon and the fact that the beacon still triggers when you heal them means holy paladins make a less effective two tank healer but making them amazing at keeping one tank alive while allowing you to raid heal as well.

Strange, I am hitting 13-15k on several bosses. I'm not well geared in my ret set either.

I actually like all 3 roles, depends on how I am feeling.

Tanking is something that I like when I really feel like being a control freak or the center of attention.

DPS is something I do when I don't really feel like doing anything, as you really can just eff around as DPS and as long as your Recount Numbers are great, nobody cares (and you don't stand in the sh**).

I like healing when I am focused and want to really challenge myself.

Yea, I actually saw what you meant this past week - I made it into heroics and ran five or six. Compared to my rogue my ret pally is a lot of work for mediocre gains in the entry-to-mid ilvl range. Not the spam until you win class it used to be. I can see why a lot of old heads were turned off to the mechanic changes. I still have way too little experience to give a solid opinion on whether they were ultimately beneficial or not.

And I probably never will, just canceled my account barely a week past trial. The game just doesn't grab me any longer. If healing was still fun I would have easily renewed. But even at level 75 my healer (holy priest) is boring as sin now, I don't want to see what it's like when mana management and PUG DPS in heroics comes into play. I'll just download a few games on PSN and Steam and put the WoW chapter(s) of my life behind me.

I prefer tanking or healing, but my guild has plenty of both so I have rerolled a hunter. I miss tanking/healing but this is a nice change, what does bother me is when the tank is clueless, and I try to drop hints on how to improve, but it's hard because no one wants to take advice now days.
