Not going to reply to the post, but I'm man enough to own up when I am wrong.

All the Blizzard insiders selling login info talk got me to do something a bit petty.

I started a 2 accounts before the expansion for RaF. Both without authenticators. One account was played on a laptop I had just bought that I used for nothing but WoW for 2 weeks while leveling up via RaF. Outside of downloading Microsoft Security Essentials it never visited the internet. Second account is still active through February. I created a gmail account solely to register these two accounts.

Point was, was going to use that account as the example of an expired unhacked account every time you guys brought up someone at Blizzard selling account information.

Almost 30 days to the date of my last day logging on I got an email on my phone on the email account created to register the game. Looked like a standard phishing email so I deleted it but figured I would check the account when I got home and see how it was doing.

Permanently banned.

I know people will just argue both sides about "see this is proof" and "obviously you weren't as careful as you thought", but from my vantage point it is good enough for me. My second RaF account without an authenticator is just ducky. My banking information, email, and other game accounts have demonstrated no reason for me to be alarmed. Nothing goofy is showing in my logs and nothing has shown up as an alert in my scans. Sure it's possible there's something on the laptop I'm just not smart enough to detect, but you'd think they would have grab the other RaF account as well. Only difference is it's still active another few weeks.

Odd secondary issue I don't completely understand. Password was not changed. Either Blizzard changed it back when they locked it, or whoever got into it never bothered changing the password. Password, as of a few minutes ago, was the same for both accounts. No big loss on the account, had a token 100 gold on it and 1 level 60.

Reminder to everyone to get an authenticator no matter how secure you feel your machine is. New, behind a firewall, and not visiting any websites seemed pretty secure to me. Heck, it hasn't even been connected to the LAN in 3 weeks as I've had it connected to my TV since the expansion launched.

Anyhow, not going to reply to this post. Just wanted to man up and say "guess I was wrong"

Dont worry I will give my opinion anyways.
The PvP MMO is NOT a "niche" market, Mythic is just a "niche" company.

Bah, that sucks, good thing it was a side account. Is the authenticator the only difference between the accounts? Are they on the same bnet account?

*sqeezes in past Arc's head*

*Looks at the OP*

See what you did?

A couple things here. Even if you are wrong and Arc is right, which could happen, you don't inflate Arc's ego but dedicated a whole thread to it and including it in the title. My God man, have you are you new here?

Secondly, as you say, as single hacked account proves nothing one way or another.

I don't see why anyone would not have an authenticator these days. We all know that WoW accounts are a huge target for hackers, the Authenticator is so cheap, why not that put that extra layer of protection? I have never been hacked, when I started back up the first thing I did was buy an authenticator. I had it activated before I even logged in for the very first time.

*Shrug*

The account wasn't suppose to have an authenticator Syrus. That's the whole point of why he made the account happy

Totally separate in every way. And I see what you did there tricking me into replying even though I said I wouldn't.

One goofball issue that could have been worse. Turns out the 1 60 was still in the guild, just had someone remove him. On the guild roster, however, it said he hadn't logged on in >1 month. That character also appeared to be the only 1 stripped.

It's definitely permanently banned, but seems really strange to me that..
1) They didn't change the password
2) The stripped character looks like it wasn't online in a month
3) I didn't see any other characters created... but I don't know if you can select level 1 characaters in the character select screen.

1&2 are what really perplex me.

I'm sorry, but what exactly do you think you've proved? I'm not sure I fully understand the experiment or the implied result.

A quick question: Did you log in the laptop, the one with the account that got banned, from two seperate locations? Also, does the laptop use a rotating or changing IPS address?

Edit: Wait. Are you saying Arc started the belief that someone was selling Blizzard account information and you rejected that notion?

Dammit Arc, I got the point. I am just saying the point is moot. He is attempting to prove accounts with out an authenticator are more vulnerable?

I think next he should prove the chance of getting wet in the rain with out an umbrella.

Of course there is some people who work for blizzard that have stolen or sold accounts. Do you know how many employees they have?

I wouldn't say that all the accounts are stolen by blizzard employees but I'm pretty sure a good number of them are.

You don't need proof for this every company on that planet has some one some where stealing something.

I believe he was trying to prove/disprove that accounts that are inactive without authenticators are more vulnerable.

I'll throw in my support behind Aliester to be a guy who knows what he's doing. I've known him for a long time.

Same thing happened to me, sort of. A week or so ago my account got hacked, i had not been playing on it since august 2010. Of course it was a trojan but how i got it is the mystery. Whatever it was it left no trace. They did not change the password. They basically logged on most characters and sold all the gear that had a worth. However they left heirlooms and gear that wasnt worth anything on the characters, they deleted nothing. Blizzard removed the last account access point which was weird. I could not see when the account was activated and how. It only showed my last activation which was back in august. Sadly they removed the paid time as well so i couldnt play that "paid" month for free, would have been nice... Either the "hack" itself was undetected by comodo firewall/av or it deleted itself when it got what it wanted. No clue really. Quite fun tho, because i dont really care that much for WoW to begin with. Only took a day for blizzard to remove the ban.

Aleister, new computers frequently come with a lot of preloaded applications (crapware) these days. Is it possible the crapware itself on the laptop was pre compromised to include a keylogger? (To be honest, I think your conclusion is correct. This points to an individual in a position of trust at Blizzard, one of its subcontractors, or one of its vendors.)

Aleister actually intended to use the account to show that an inactive account without an authenticator will remain safe to disprove the assumption that employees at Blizzard are utilizing inactive accounts as 'slave accounts'. It backfired on him, the purity of his almost virgin laptop just makes my theory about inside work all that more evident.

Is this a case of facts proving a positive? Not at all. Is it a case of evidence showing a hypothesis as plausible? Absolutely.

EDIT: I was agreeing with you Rill, just in a long worded way tongue

I would like to add that my account is from release. No authenticator. Account has been dormant for over a year two or three times. I usually play for 2-3 months, then go away for 6-18 months. I have not been hacked yet. I also use FireFox + NoScript + NoAds, and I only login to account admin using my own bookmarked links.
