what will you be eating more of/less of this year?

more salads?
more veggies?

less red meat?

will you steam or bake more things and fry less?

was looking at a magazine that was talking about black rice and its benefits over brown and white. thought i might try some.

Taste wise, black rice really isn't much different, but I can't get past the appearance. It cooks up almost bluish purple. Bleh! sick

As for healthier foods, I started that this past year and plan to continue.

I've been doing a lot more salads over the past year, trying to find unique recipes and concocting some as well. I've stopped using iceberg all together, now only using arugula or romaine most of the time.

I've also started using barley a lot, not pearled though. Pearled barley has a lot of its vitamin value and bran and such steamed out of it. But whole grain barley you can toss in soup, boil up like oats for breakfast, or serve as a side dish with some salt.

I've yet to be able to win anyone over in the house except my birds on flaxseed.

I also switched to steel cut oats instead of rolled, as the rolled ditches out a lot of nutrients as well.

And I've been trying to use veggies from my garden more than the store now that it is growing well.

Edit: Red meat I can't remove or my husband will divorce me.

Yeah I can tolerate flaxseed in about anything, but the rest of the family - eh that's a tough sell.

As for the rice, if you can get past the appearance, the taste really is nondescript, tastes like most any other rice to me. But you can't cook anything with it or it gets the bleeding of bluish effect and it just ugh.

I've been trying Jasmine rice lately, I bought a bag just to try it because I never had. I boiled it with four chamomile cloves and a half spoonful of lavender and wow, it was really yummy.

i will try to eat more fresh foods such as salads. its a pain because i can never finish those types of food before they go bad. feels bad having to throw out spoiled fruits/vegetables regularly. wish i could buy fresh fruits/vegetables in halves. i usually eat frozen vegetables instead.

as for rice, basmati rice is the only one i'll touch! purple rice sounds freaky tho...i almost wanna try it now just because of that.

Over the past 18 months, I've pretty much removed sugar from my diet, put in everything that I can think of that is either whole wheat or multigrain. I've also put vegetables back in my diet, making them for every meal and snacking on veggies rather than useless carbs or sugars. I still eat red meat but have put in a lot more poultry and fish as well. 18 months ago, I was diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes.

I've also been practicing portion control and have lost over 40 pounds. I still have another 40 pounds to lose to be at my target weight.

yeah I have been trying to lose a few pounds. So far I have trimmed 15 pounds off but I think that is more to the fact that I have been doing more physical activity( Cleaning out the Greenscape behind my house) Generally I have stayed away from Iceberg lettuce. Pretty much have always done Romaine. I am trying to cook more Basmati this year rather than Jasmine Rice or Brown Rice. Also trying to work one Vegetarian Recipe a week. Other than that I need to stay away from Soda and hard liquor

I started eating better in Sept of last year and have lost almost 25lbs so far. I have added more fruits and vegies. Switched just about everything to whole grain. Less butter and more cooking spray. More sweet potatoes than regular potatoes. Controlling my portion sizes. I bought a little kitchen scale and use it often, as well as measuring my food. I have been using an online food/exercise/weight/measurement tracker to keep me going.

To some extent yes, but with my family's diabetic history (everyone has it, both sides), I will be using insulin eventually. I'm just putting it off as long as possible. I just started taking oral medication twice a day to control my blood sugar along with diet and exercise but it's the lowest dosage I can take for now.
