That was quick. I've already played through the tutorials, but will do so with a worgen again and voice my feedback here afterward.

Seriously though, it's crazy they're giving it away so soon.

I thought it was quick too, so I went back and looked at past trials:

The trial for BC came out 4 months after release.

The trial for WoTLK came out 1 month after release.

The trial for Cataclysm came out 1 week after release.

Draw your own conclusions.

My conclusion is they are getting faster at doing stuff they've done many times before. happy Maybe next expansion they'll have the trial ready at the same time or just have a continuous trial available forever. They are always going to want new players to try the game so why not have it from day 1 and forever? (with appropriate limits on what a trial person can do to reduce abuse for spam, etc).

Sadly, 7 days is long enough to experience EVERYTHING this expansion has to offer so far...

The reason this offer appeared sooner-than-later is because the community asked for it. Those players, still on the fence about the expansion and its changes, wanted a preview of the 'new' game before they plucked money into returning.

From a business standpoint, Blizzard really has nothing to lose and everything to gain from this move.

If those players decide against a purchase, Blizzard loses nothing. But, if those players re-up, it's more money.

Also, bear in mind, first impressions are everything.

The starting levels and storyline are an instant and easy draw. Whether or not the end game plays out isn't a factor for the trial players.

We all know the first few levels are the impression for any game that decides whether we pay for a subscription. In most cases, that first impression makes or breaks an MMO.

It's smart business for Blizzard to offer the trial so soon.

Its not smart business at all when their vets can complete the entire expansion during the 7 day trial and have no reason to continue. After 7 days they will see the state of raiding or pvp (all that is left) and may more likely decide that WoW is done.

It it is definitely a business risk, and not smart by any means.

I dont think the average player seeking to try out the game is going to reach max level/ be able to raid or any of that in 7 days. Hell, I dont even know what level limitations or other roadblocks they put on a trial account these days.. but I know in the past when I have used a trial account it is really bare bones. ie..no trading items/gold, no chat. etc etc. Seeing what limited amount you can see with a trial account probably gets a newbie drooling for more.

But I know what your point is.. us vets could eat up the content and spit it out pretty fast if we chose to.

You would be surprised how many people 'can' get to max lvl and gear out inside a week. I took my mage from 40ish to 85 and had him in heroics inside 5 real days...

Again, the trial is not meant for 'vets' or anyone of that nature. The trial is meant for those players on the fence who may have been gone for some time from the game. It's also for those people who have never played the game.

As also mentioned, the trial limits those areas that full members enjoy. For example, there's no getting beyond level 20 with the trial for a new account or character.

For the people Blizzard aims the trial for, this is smart business. Besides, most 'vets' haven't left the game despite what they say here or elsewhere.

The limitations of trials are also there to not make the "job" too easy for gold farmers/sellers.

If its capped at 81 then retract my statement. Players won't get past hyjal or vashj, and both of those zones are "the fun" of the xpac, so its another blizzard bait and switch that might work quite nicely actually.

Indeed! I my case, i want to start on a new server from scratch and i take it slowly while playing, i'm not in a hurry.

But yeah, for veteran or the more hardcore players, 7 days is plenty to get to max level and get heroic gears. I saw guildies pretty much start from lv 1 to get raid ready in a week or two.

About the trial being old news: well, it was new to me! And pretty timely, I wanted to take a thorough hike through the newly wrecked world.

Having played through the worgen and goblin starting zones again as different classes this time around (from when I first tried them out a bit on a friend's account a month-or-so ago) I have to say they're pretty damn amazing - especially as far as MMO content generally goes. I felt compelled to digest all of the quest text moreso than I usually do in games, and the extra effort they put into "modernizing" the old kill-or-collect formula really shows.

I decided to stick with my worgen rogue when I ventured beyond the starting zones, mainly because I first played vanilla WoW as an Alliance character. There were a number of moments that really grabbed me with the changes, and made me feel rewarded (for lack of a better word) for having experienced this world before the massive changes - especially in a way that players post-TBC really can't have appreciated IMO. One was finding the pier I first used for fishing in Loch Modan, now just a silent monument sitting far away from whatever water is left within the destroyed lake. Another was exploring Menethil Harbor and how the cataclysm so organically affected it. I admit, by the time I reached the end of the Snellig storyline a second time around, with its changes, I stopped for a moment and was like "whoa". Stormwind is amazing now too.

Another kudos goes to the new quest hub locations within zones, and the manner in which the player is guided from hub to hub.

Curiously though, I wasn't enamored by the new level 80+ content, at least not thus far. I've completed a good number of quests in Mount Hyjal, and I don't know - it's magnificent looking and the writing and gameplay is still strong, but for some reason that I can't place my finger on it just isn't drawing me in. I think I'll try out that aquatic zone next session instead.

If I decide to renew beyond the trial and make it into heroics I'll maybe post some thoughts. But I'm thinking that if I do continue, it will probably be on my rogue until I complete the updated old world content then quit.

The post-80 stuff seems like more of the same to me too, so I've been using this time to level up some alts that I never wanted to because of how long it took in pre-Cataclysm. I think the old zones were done fairly well, and is much more streamlined now so you don't have to run to the other continent to get quests done anymore (as much anyway). Some of them are meh, some are really good, and some are just downright ROFLMAO (I highly suggest you do the quests by three drunk NPC's in Badlands who attempt to explain to you why there's a huge scar in that zone now). I was able to solo all those quests, either because they were just easy, or there was often an NPC who assisted you in fighting if it was an elite for instance.

Don't forget to run random dungeons too if you find questing to be boring or want better gear than quests provide.
