For those of you sick of WoW, here is a preview of the new KotoR game that gives it good "preview" grades.

Between SWTOR probably not coming out in 2011 and GW2 looking so tasty, I'm actually leaning towards trying the latter first, something I really didn't expect a year ago.

I know this may be blasphemy, but I have no desire whatsoever to try the new (or any other) Star Wars games. I am a casual fan (at best) of the Star Wars brand and I think Galaxies may have ruined any excitement I may have ever felt for a Star Wars game. I still think that game was the worst MMO I ever played, although Asheron's Call 2 was a bigger disappointment for me personally.

I don't think that it is really going to make a dent or be any more successful than the last dozen or so MMO's released since WoW.

WoW is still going to swallow up MMO's for years to come.

Waiting for it more and more impatiently.
It's one of the two upcoming games that, for the first time, has some potential to equal WoW in quality.

A game doesn't need to make a dent to be good.  Personally, I hope SW:TOR kicks ass.  Not because I care about how it does "against" WoW, but because more good games to play is always a god thing.

Now obviously, you are going to have all the retards calling it a WoW killer or whatever (the Rift Beta was full of idiots like that and so have all the other games I've played in the last 5 years) but does it matter?  No.

Oh Spooky. You said WoW CAT is going the way of TOA.

But you are correct, WoW is king and will remain so, but games need but a fraction of their numbers to make money.

I am a bit sick of bioware games. I think I own about every single one, but a couple. The last one I wasted money on due to playing it very little. After DAO, I was overdosed with it.

I base all my opinions on previously branded games made by entirely different companies.

IGN also had a good, positive preview recently too and their previous commentary was less than flattering. I would guess we won't see TOR until holiday 2011, but it appears to be heading in the right direction ... at least Bioware is trying to fix the broken crafting game design that WoW and previous MMOs all adhered to.

So what I'm gathering from this hands-on preview is:

It's not doing anything better than current decent MMO's (meh)

Combat feels like WoW, except a bit more epic because of the battle music.(lolwut)

Classes don't actually need to depend on each other in group situations. (meh)

Parts of the MMO aspect of the game is watching zombies stand around listening to NPC's drone on endlessly. (meh)

Instances so far consist of pointless trash mobs, boring boss fights and 30 minute dialog tree cutscenes. (boring)

You also have a good chance, thanks to RNG, to be subjected to the lowest common denominators dialog choices ruining your story experience. (no thanks)

So the whole game is still entirely hanging on the 'innovation' of non-stop NPC voiceovers? I'm still not seeing a reason to play this. plain

I like that they game will still be using the holy trinity of tank/dps/heal. Yes they have some differences (ranged tank anyone) but all in all this should be a very comfortable game for WoW players to pick up.

Does it matter if there isn't some huge innovation?  Most people just want something new that compares to WoW and doesn't suck like Aion/WAR/AofC/Whatever.

If they accomplish that task, millions will play.
If they don't, millions will buy it and quickly quit after a couple months.

Note that "compares to WoW" doesn't mean "WoW clone", something others have believed and have utterly failed with. Compares to WoW means same playability, same combat dynamism, same responsiveness, same quality, same finish, same talent in designing areas and quests. Idiots mistake that for a WoW clone, not understanding it's a mistake to clone the master. The first smart developer will be the one able to imitate that without making a WoW clone.

I think that's a hilariously embarrassing mis-design. Who were the tanks in the Star Wars movies? Who were the healers? It's been a while since I watched them but I can't remember.

^^ this. The bar has been set so low, a game only has to be halfway decent to ensure a measure of success (LotRO comes to mind).

I enjoy bashing without suggesting solutions.

I also enjoy tea party logic too. Everything should adhere strictly to some standard from a long time ago and not adapt to a new age.

Everything I've read recently has been positive and also addresses some of the core MMO problems in games like WoW. Either people aren't reading the articles, can't comprehend them or are just trolling.

I thought the holy trinity was Tank/Heal/CC. The DPS is just assumed.

That said, so many MMOs over the last three years failed so hard and it appears developers want them to fail.

It's strange.

Warhammer's Mark Jacobs is quoted on his statements about Age of Conan's missteps, yet he turned right around and repeated them . . . hard.

It was like watching The Twilight Zone or something.

Star Trek Online and A.P.B. continued the trend of releasing a half-done product with no endgame in sight.

Seriously, if any of the previous MMOs over the last three years were even remotely successful, Blizzard wouldn't be making these record sales.

But, honestly, there's nothing else to play worth the time.

Sad state, but Dark Age of Camelot and World of Warcraft stayed and stay king of the hill because there was or is no competition.

As far as Star War MMO being a successful MMO?

I recall more than a few reviewers and players gushing over Warhammer Online too.

I'll believe it when I see it.

God help them if they release their game the same time Diablo III comes out.

I didn't think there were any tanks in the movies.. unless you count maybe my walker to the left. Hell if they put that in as a class to tank on I will play it. If you didn't assign roles I am not sure what you would have, may all DPS? We have all seen a boss fight w/o a tank and its not a pretty sight. But then again if you want to talk about bad decisions in the Starwars IP... all 6 are being remade in 3D over the next 4 years.

You may be looking at the traditional appearance/functionality of tank wrong in this. I would assume that a tank in star wars wouldn't neccessarily be absorbing damage by just being hit but, absorbing it as in deflecting it away or using the force to mitigate it.

The concept of "tank" got out of control at some point. Threat never should have been a number the players have access to, and no one should be able to "manage" it. "Tanking" should come from the tank character managing the ABILITY of the enemies to attack rear-echelon characters, not the DESIRE to.

Collision detection, zones of control, attacks of opportunity, etc.

Not "taunting".

That said, I have no idea how it works in Star Wars, I'm not following it that closely.

Ultima Online did not have any type of holy trinity, people just got together and did their thing.

AC was the same way wasn't it?

I SO wish someone would just make a modern 3D Ultima Online, then we could be done with new MMO's forever.
