The cold rain ran down the clumps of dark hair stuck to his forehead. All around the splatter of water filled the air, and masked the sound of him moving through the undergrowth. He wasn't far from the stone building at the edge of the village. The brush stopped abruptly and turned into about ten feet of rough, wet field grass where the site had been cleared. Halfway up the wall was his objective, a small, narrow window. It looked so tiny. He hoped her small form could squeeze through there. Without an army to charge the front gate, Chazcon knew this was their only hope.

Milhaud was on guard duty two nights before, at the camp on the rock ledge where Chazcon's men had been scouting and sending out raiding parties against the Burun. It was Milhaud who had half dragged, half carried the boy into the cave where the crackling fire warmed their bones and dried out their rough-hewn clothing. The boy glared at his captor and occasionally struggled to get free.

"What have ye got there mate?" cried out Langarl in surprise.

Chazcon was asleep in the back of the cave, but stood now, his cloak pulled around his shoulders. "Does he speak?" he asked.

"He hasn't said a word, although he's a bother to pull about." said Milhaud, still holding the boy tight by the arms.

The other men were awake by now, grumbling about the noise and disturbance.

Chaz nodded to Langarl who nodded back, and moved to block the cave entrance. "Let him go, let's see what he does." Chaz commanded.

As soon as the boy was released he stood firm and straightened up, and said, "Are you Chazcon?"

Chaz stood with his arms crossed now. "Aye, it is me."

"Good!" said the boy. "I have news of Shalura!"

At this Chazcon leaped across the cave and took the boy to the ground by the neck. His face was enraged. "Shalura!" he growled. "Where is she!" All the men were on their feet now and three of them grabbed Chaz to pull him back. "Easy, Chaz, he's just a lad!" said one of the men.

"Hey!" I didn't hurt her!" the boy yelled, visibly shaken.

"WHERE IS SHE?" Chaz screamed at him.

The boy trembled but pressed on. "In our village! In the sheriff's keep! The lizard-men brought here there! Lots of them! They killed some townsfolk and took our village!" He took a deep breath. Chazcon shook free from the arms holding him. The boy continued, "They killed the sheriff! Ran him right through they did! But I heard them. I was in the keep cell building a bench for the sheriff."

"What did they say, the lizard-men? Out with it quick!" snapped Chaz.

"Well I didn't it hear it all, mind you, 'cause I must'a made a noise, they came in after me! I got out right sharp like, out the high window in the cell. They didn't see me. Nearly got stuck."

"TELL ME WHAT THEY SAID!" Chaz yelled at the now-cowering boy. The men thought he was going to snap again and they stood ready. He had been like this for months now. The strain was wearing him down.

"They said, they brought her here for you!" Chazcon's heart skipped a beat. It could only mean a very few things, none of them good.

"Don't you see? said the boy, "They brought her here for bait!"
