I alpha and beta tested a genre that has become such a main stay. I loved AC1 and tested AC2 (all kind of phases) and even contributed to a tip book for it, I just didnt get bit by it... and wasnt sad to see it die. But I very much miss the days of old of AC. And I mean the days of old.
I assume the game has advanced beyond the graphic upgrade I did about 3-4 years ago. I also assume it has grown stale for the every day gamer too.

With that said, the basics of AC made it appealing and with a huge gap from when I played to where we are today, I wonder if it would be fun.
Keep in mind I grew up and benefited from the free XP Alliance system, which I imagine is gone or so far exploited it is useless. But the thoughts of me starting back as a level 1 with a cap of 200 (and the highest I ever got was 96 and that was about a 3 year run)... I really am disenchanted by the prospect of leveling.

I figure the fan base is low and picking a server will be critical. I will naturally gravitate to Morningthaw which is where I cut my teeth.

So would ya do it?
Im a casual player... and now a days a nostalgic player.
I wish I could recover my original accounts, but they have long been sold, passed on to others and no way in my control.... but yes, I would love to come back with my original account (Mystic Angel or my secondary, Professor X)
Either way.. it is day one with the question... should I even bother, no matter how nostalgic I am.
(Since leaving I tested and played D&D then moved on to LOTRO (originally MEO) and currently play LOTRO as a lifer)

Trial is just that... a trial. I appreciate the heads up on it, but at the end of the day, it will only tell me so much.

There's really a lot to do on the free trial you can have a lot of fun getting to 50 through the facility hub which allows you to see a lot of content that you probably didn't see. Also there are still buffbots around on leafcul atleast so
You shouldn't have to worry about magic. I rolled a unarmed character for fun and have gotten to like 25 in one hour or so. You could easily get to 90 quick but I think the free trial caps you at lvl 20

It is also still possible to play the game the old way, doing the original quests, not using the quest facility hub, even on Darktide. I just got done doing that, leveled a char up to 40+ doing things like GMC, Halls of Helm, SoLL. If you are at all nostalgic for it, just do it. No reason not to.

I will say that AC is among the most casual-friendly MMORPG's out there, which is primarily why I play it. With the town network and quest hubs now in place, its that much more convenient.

Every so often I think about turning on at least one of my old accounts. I found I still have my account name and passwords stored on an old computer. WoW is still going strong for me and I have a lot of advanture ahead with the expansion. Still I might spend a little money; just to see how the old game has progressed.

Its definitely become an "easier" game, but it seems so in a good, very fun way. They've put in place some great hunting grounds that are outdoors and it seems they have finally got around to addressing Outdoor hunting xp and loot to make it almost in line with some high level dungeon areas.

Put this way...My Martyr mage always struggled to live, but now he is having an easier time at it. Not to say it isn't still difficult though, just takes the sting off a bit.

BTW, Greetings Fist!

Maybe I'm just an MMO masochist, but to me the challenge was part of the fun. Getting lost wandering the Direlands, putting a quick recovery party together to go retrieve corpses, or just plain wandering into a hornet's nest of bad guys when you weren't expecting it was what created so many great memories for me.

I've been playing LOTO and a little bit of DDO because they're free. They seem convenient enough, but there is little there to generate excitement.

Playing some of these newer games has had me reconsidering Asheron's Call a bit, but I guess you really just can't go home again. Maybe the game is the same and it's me who has changed, or maybe the loss of so many good friends and allegiance members over the years makes Dereth feel like a ghost town now.

I'm seriously considering a return, myself. After playing almost every other major MMO that's released since '99, I still find myself pining for some Drudges now and then. I know my friends would probably enjoy returning, too.

Hmm...

honestly, you should only return if you understand how this game functions now. With a level cap of 275, everyones main focus is to level up as soon as possible. Furthermore, the majority of the new and interesting content that turbine adds is centered around 200+ characters. This game seems survive mainly because of the possibility of ACM (attended combat macro). Leveling to 200+ manually is a horrendous task that I would never wish upon my worst of enemies. However, if you would like to play the game the way it was back in the beginning, that is still entirely possible. Just dont expect to have a lot of friends interested in the same thing. This game is still around because of how many different ways you can choose to play, whether you just wanna grind 24/7 to reach the higher level content, or bask in the nostalgic glory of all the old content that still exists.

AC has undergone many many changes, I'd start with the free trial though that will not give you enough understanding of the high level content.
