I've been on both sides w/ this. I log on my Mage and offer free ports anywhere. I only do that because I was pissed that Mages were charging 10g-20g a pop for ports.

Then I turn around and log other players of mine that need a port and offer 10g for the port.

Is this going to be a standard now? Are Mages just going to be used for the port ability? I don't mind getting tipped on my Mage for a port, but I can't stand those that are setting up shop in Dal for business.

This only affects from when 4.0.3a launched to when Cataclysm comes out. After Cat is out there is ZERO reason for an 80+ player to go to Dalaran. Under normal circumstances anyways.

I refuse to tip a mage for a portal.

You cant stand them..why?

No one forces a single soul to take a mage port, but most find it worth the money to not waste time flying to one of the starter areas for the zepplin.

Why do you care if people:
A. have the money
B. want to spend it on fast travel.

Seems like you are complaining just to complain, and have no real reason to do so.

I saw someone in /2 the other day ask for a portal from Darnassus to Stormwind. I couldn't figure out of this was a troll, or someone truely in need.

What about the Dalaran cooking and fishing dailies? Or are the new ones in the other capital cities going to render those useless?

The new ones give a new tier of reward/token. I doubt anyone would go back except to fill out recipe lists/cheevo type of stuff.

As a tangent question... is there any official word on why (gameplay-wise, not lore) the portals were removed, if the removal is going to be permanent, and what are Bliz's expectations for players traveling to/from Outlands and Northrend? I'm not even sure where's the best place to train my outlands chars anymore (Shatt doesn't have class trainers does it?).

They added class trainers to shat and dalaran (and auction houses too)

It is a smart move from Blizzard, it return the players to the cities of Azeroth.

Why would you be angry at someone offering a service and then charging for it?

I don't think I would pay 10g or 20g for a port. That is a little steep IMO. So far I have not encountered any greedy mages. I've not asked for a lot of portals, but the mage simply asked for a tip. I tipped 5g.

I don't have a ton of gold right now though, my combined gold on my characters is under 6k. I just started back up. If the mage was willing to port himself from another city and come to me I wouldn't mind tipping 10g.

People that do this as a service do not anger me, but they do puzzle me. There has to be quicker ways to farm gold.

It isn't about farming gold..

Its about taking money that is freely handed out.

"ISO mage port from dal to org, paying 10g"..

this 10g is going to someone, so that someone may as well be me.

Add to that, the people that just walk up and ask for a port. Now, If i am in the RDF, and let someone into my group, i am going to have to requeue once you are portaled.

That COSTS 10g for my inconvenience, in advance, before I let you in the group.

Don't like it? Take the boat, and waste 10 minutes of your time, instead of 10 minutes of mine having to requeue.

Doesn't bother me at all.  This is how "Classic" was.

I don't see what the issue is.  Either pay or don't, done.

Lol yeah I get the logic behind offering a port if you catch it in trade chat, what I don't get are the people who set up shop and just sit there all day spamming, "Selling ports!" There has to be a faster way to make money then that.

I'm not against people charging for gold, I don't think my post suggested that, but you sound a little bit defensive. Easy there, we get, pay for a port or take the boat, lol.

Not defensive..

Just most people that don't have mages don't realize it costs the mage time if they are running randoms.

Faster? Yeah, Easier, and lazier? Probably not. I've made a few hundred gold past few days just sitting in Dalaran.

I'm not sure why people who need to get to Kalimdor forget about the port to the Caverns of Time in Dalaran. It saves me a lot of time.

If someone has a problem with other people charging, do what the lady does and go give them away for free in the name of Z Guild.

Besides, you will either build a good rep for helping out others, or quickly start changing yourself to reduce the hassle.

With two accounts I have a mage to portal one group. Now I'm making a second mage so the other account has transport.

I have been amusing myself by standing at the IF bank and asking for a port to the IF portal drop so I don't have to walk. Its amazing the number of people offering to guide me to it so I don't need a port. Helpful but my warped humor is a bit wasted on them.

I give free portals on my mage while my other classes take the zep.

Unless a mage friend is nearby.

If there's demand, someone will provide supply. Moralizing aside, if it's not against the rules, it's like worrying whether the sun will come up tomorrow.

Sides, it's no worse than those who offer or pay players gold to sign their guild charter.

As Clay Davis once said, "I'll take any mother----er's money if he's giving it away."

So let 'em have at it.

I needed a port to IF earlier asap & can't be bothered with going to trade to wtb portal. I /msg this mage standing beside me in Dalaran. He can't passed up my offer & paid 50 gold without hesitation. Then again I have 156.5k gold in my alt guild bank to care bout mere pennies.
