And they are remarkably good.

It is hard to find traditional fantasy in first person and even more difficult to find a series where each book is unique and fresh as opposed to yet another book in the series.

I think Steven Brust takes the #4 spot on my top five fantasy authors list that I have never completed past 3 names.

Told you that a year ago tongue .

Now you need to read his series that starts with The Phoenix Guards. Starts a thousand or so years before the events of the Vlad Taltos series. Totally different style, yet even more unique in their own way.

wiki posted:
Brust has also written another series set in Dragaera, the Khaavren Romances, set centuries before Vlad's time. Since Dragaerans live for thousands of years, many characters appear in both series. It is partly an homage to Alexandre Dumas, père's novels about the Three Musketeers, and is five volumes long, following the pattern of Dumas' series. The books are presented as historical novels written by Paarfi of Roundwood, a Dragaeran roughly contemporary with Vlad. Paarfi's old-fashioned, elaborate, and highly verbose writing is explicitly based on Dumas', though with a dialogue style that is, at times, based on Tom Stoppard's wordgames in Rosencrantz & Guildenstern Are Dead (according to Pamela Dean's introduction to Five Hundred Years After).

Basically it covers the events leading up to and following the Adron's disaster, but that's not the main point of the story, it just kinda happens during it. Khaavren is the main guy in the stories and he does appear in the Vlad Taltos series as an old Phoenix Guard who scares the bejeezus out of Vlad because he can just sense how bad ass the guy is and doesn't want to mess with him. It also covers a lot of who Sethra is and how Morollan became Morollan, also Aliera..etc.

And, Brust is in my top 3 authors of all time in fantasy personally.

The first book is Jhereg. It is no longer in publication as a stand alone novel but it can be found in a collection called "Book of Jhereg" which includes Jhereg, Yendi and Teckla, the first three books in publication order.

I have no idea if it's available on the nook since I haven't joined the 21st century yet.

It is not available in ebook form through the publisher.

I bought the books then downloaded the fan made computer versions and then converted them to .epub format.

They vary, some are near perfect - the only flaws is the formatting tends to get smooshed together so it is like reading giant paragraphs.

Sometimes you get spelling errors. Like, a name that is similar to a word will get turned in to that word or it will mess up certain letter combinations occasionally. Those are still readable, I never have to stop and try to figure out the word as it is always something very close. It isn't like it happens constantly throughout.

Other times you get really screwed up errors. One time I had one where every single ' appeared as ;

You can also test different source files and different conversions. The Nook can read a few different formats. If I recall correctly none of the Taltos books had the third problem. Just smooshed paragraphs and occasional problems with words.

Awesome, I think I'll grab the first one in print, and then see about the rest in ebooks. Thanks for the info.
