I hate to say it, but I agree with Spooky on this one.

I mean, would it be that hard to give a pet to people who have played forever and a day? heh

Currently in the MMO unemployment line.
Can I get $15/month for not playing them?

No no, that IS the gift. You're given the gift of being able to buy a new pet for charity.

The best gifts are the ones you give. grin

They've given out pets in the past...but that'd probably conflict with their milking of players since they put 2 more pets up for sale the same day as their anniversary this time around.

It's all pretty amusing. Pay up, suckas!

You DO realize the proceeds from the pet sales go to charity? Hardly "milking of players" when a) you don't have to buy these at all; b) they are not profitting from this as a company; c) they are leveraging their popularity to raise funds for worthy charitable organizations.

It's not on all the pets. Pandaren Monk and the Moonkin Hatchling. And it's only 50% of the proceeds. They are making a profit. It's also only for limited time on their donations.

If you want to give to Make a Wish then call them up and give them $100. Don't defend what I personally consider a dumb purchase decision by saying it's for charity. Much better ways to help out the many charities out there and more effectively.

I know Make-a-Wish is a good cause, and I know Blizzard could have sold this thing (wtfever a pandaren monk is?) and donated nothing to Make-a-Wish, but I always lol at these statements, which are obviously more attempts to make themselves look like a socially conscious corporations than someone really wanting to help. They couldn't have parted with the $1.1 mil out of the $180 mil per month they're grossing from subs alone? rolling_eyes

Again, it's a worthy cause and good that they donated rather than pocketing the money, but they shouldn't break their arms patting themselves on the back. It was the player base who footed the bill. The difference is that Blizzard (rather than the player base) gets to claim the charitable deduction on their taxes.

Whatever, I still don't get your attitude of them "milking the customer" for a non-essential (completely optional purchase, for a vanity pet. Also, Blizzard could have just done nothing at all, instead they created the opportunity to raise some funds for charity, asking we the players to help. Not that different than a pledge drive, or going door to door selling cookies that I don't really "need".

If you don't wnat to buy one, don't. Callinig it a dumb purchase decision is a bit silly. Slamming other people for something they like, just because you personally don't? I would rather spend money to support a good cause this way than buy some crap someone sells door to door, or on a telethon pledge drive, or whatever. I wouldn't call any of those avenues "dumb" though, just not my preference.

It's milking and Blizzard is damn good at it. For a subscription based game, Blizzard sure has come up with a lot of different ways to entice players to pay for optional content/services. Nothing wrong with milking the customer, I just think the prices should be about half of what they are charging for most stuff.

After seeing how many people bought the last pets and the spectral steed, I'd double the price of the items. mischief

First, price reflects what the market is willing to pay. Second, how many times do people have to be spoon fed that Blizzard is a business, in business to make a profit? Of course they will try anything and everything to earn revenue. And so what if they maintain half of the proceeds? If I can purchase something I want, while a portion of the proceeds goes to charity, it's hardly a bad thing. They make money, the charity gets money, and I receive a fluff item that NO ONE is forced to buy nor has any in-game impact. Again, you people will whine over anything. Oh wait, I forgot the cool thing is to call it a critique now...

Shame on Blizzard for trying to make their shareholders happy by turning a profit while also giving a small portion of their revenue to charity! Don't those greedy capitalist pigs know it is their duty to provide us with free service and products at all possible times! The nerve of those bastards plain

I'd be more impressed if they continued donating to the charity for every pet sold. As it is now though there is a time limit involved with buying the pet and having them donate. For instance, they no longer donate money when you buy a Pandaren Monk.

OK.. fair enough, it isn't 100% proceeds, and isn't all pets, and is limited time. Those facts really didn't change the basis of my point, and didn't really refute much of anytihng, so I took them as casual associated facts. Didn't realize that I needed to pat you on the head for them, I was more focused on your being an asshat by calling people's decision to buy these "dumb". happy

Wasn't there only one anniversary pet, being Ony? That was for year 5, no? I am sure there's a design to the annual rewards. Let's be honest, WoW isn't going anywhere, so the 6th year isn't too significant.

So I guess it is only 1/2 milking the customers if 50% went to charity. If you wanna play the charity card, why didn't they give ALL the money to charity? Sheesh, even their spin is starting to sucker people in.

Activison is greedy. Period. This is evidenced by everything they do, from RealID and FB integration to mini transactions.

Bobby Kotick is even quoted as saying "I want to take the fun out of gaming"

Why can't anyone ever be happy that Make a Wish got 1.1 Million dollars they would not have otherwise gotten?

How big are your charitable contributions?

Why is it always "omg they could do more!!1", and not "wow, they did SOMETHING they didn't have to do!"?

the main basis of your original point was to say they didn't profit from the sales which isn't even remotely true. They profited 100% on every pet but two. And on those two pets their donations were for "limited" times. Their profit level was still way over 50% on both of those.

The part you disagree with in my post was that I consider it a dumb purchase decision. You don't have to agree with it. But at least get your facts right before making blanket statements.

Resorting to the asshat label as you lose standing is worth a rolling_eyes .

Did you or did you not make a blanket statement on the the proceeds not going to blizzard at all???? Were you wrong??? Just address the points instead of attacking the person. It just makes you look small. (insert appropriate that's what your wife/gf/bf said joke here)

The main basis of my post was that people shouldn't act like blizzard is out to steal their money (using terms like '"milking" the customer' generally is associated with immoral if not illegal business practices akin to stealing). I think you somehow missed the main point, actually.

Anyway, since you seem fixated on my secondary point (charity proceeds and such) yes, I did say "the pet sales" and that was overgeneralized, and also I overstated in suggesting all proceeds went to charity, for all pets sold. Very blanket statement, and as you correctly stated, not correct. I accept the criticism for making a blanket statement regarding how many of the pets were sold with what percent going to charity for what limited time. My bad, for sure.

The only part of your post I responded to was the part I took offense to, plain and simple. I wasn't trying to dodge the rest of the comments, I just don't like that you slammed people who buy these pets just because you don't want to (and seem to feel somehow Blizzard is trying to milk you of your hard earned wages, evidently). I simply didn't know that it was required to acknowledge your valid points in order to call you out for being a jackwagon with your one comment. Sorry, I just can't keep up on the rules.

They should have sent out the bear pet again for those that rolled on new servers.

Surprised no one answered this, unless I missed it in the wall of text. There are two 'anniversary' pets.

The Fourth Anniversary pet is the white Blizzard Bear Cub or words to that effect.

The Fifth Anniversary pet is the Whelpling.

I believe those remain the only two.

Nope. Folks just want to keep as much of their money as they can. Since when is asking for more free stuff a bad thing? I want free stuff, I suspect you want free stuff too. happy
