As long as you only go into expecting an action flick it rocks. Was great seeing all those action heroes in one move... even the cameo.

it is the worst movie i've ever sat through. i hilariously attempted to pay attention to the plot. really though, the point where the transporter is sticking his stupid head out of a hole in the nose of a flying plane with no glasses or goggles or anything on and he's just sitting there all eyes open like the wind wouldn't force his eyes shut and blind him at that speed was mind bottling to me. and why was he even in there? the guns were mounted inside the nose. he couldn't aim them. why didn't the pilot just have a little trigger for them? ruined my whole suspension of disbelief so early in it's retarded time frame.

If you're not a man and don't consider Commando and Rocky 4 as two of the greatest movies ever, I don't know why you would even watch this movie.

i'm not a man and i don't consider commando and rocky 4 as even remotely good, let alon the greatest movies ever. despite that, i do enjoy action movies occasionally. i somewhat enjoyed the first 2 transporters and what have you. i like watching well choreographed fighting. this movie had none of that.

The dialogue was awful, the acting (obviously) was awful. It was painfully slow in a few places and it had a lot of the completely unbelievable action cliches like enemies standing around waiting to be shot and weapons (grenades) being completely absent in one scene then magically in infinite supply in the next.

They tried to give it a message with the whole saving the girl thing but it was a limp-wristed attempt made worse by Stallone's inability to convey an emotion.

A 'mindless action flick' has to maintain some standard of quality and this film lacked in too many of them. I can deal with bad dialogue and acting if the story is good and the action is entertaining and I can deal with a weak plot and cliche'd action if the characters and acting are good. You can't have bad dialogue, weak story, tons of cliches and ridiculous acting and not suck.

I rolled my eyes and almost shut it off when the two wrestlers had their showdown. I'm sure this movie was extremely popular in the pro wrestling segment of the population.

Yoss and Cao seem to have missed the point here. The 80's was full of cheesy, ridiculous action movies with lots of bullets and living cartoons delivering bad one liners while they flexed for the camera...movies like Commando, Rambo, Rocky 3-4, Bloodsport. They weren't exactly oscar contenders, but it didn't matter.

The Expendables was Stallone's homage to those movies, which should be obvious from the casting. If you were expecting a slick, smart, choreographed action movie, you were in the wrong place. happy

Remaking mediocre movies doesn't make the remake clever or good.

It just makes it out-dated and derivative.

You are mistaken if you think we don't get it. You are also mistaken if you think 'getting it' automatically excuses everything.

well he's goddamn horrible at making homage films. he should get someone else to write, direct and act in them for him.

I think for those of us raised through the funky action movies of the 70's, the 80's popcorn action flicks were something new and fun so we may have a softer spot for The Expendables then those who were raised on later action movies. I mean really, try watching the Bourne trilogy then going back and watching any of the late 70's Bond films. I enjoyed the heck out of those Bond movies at the time but now they are hard to watch.

Look, I realize the 80's action flicks were mostly horrible. They were cheesy, testosterone fueled, full of bad one liners and living he-men and devoid of intelligent plot. It also didn't matter because I was an 8 year old boy and they starred Arnold and Stallone. Commando, Rocky 4, Rambo 3, Bloodsport etc. were probably 1 star movies at best, and it didn't matter.

That is what the Expendables was going for. Does it make the Expendables a good movie? No. Does it bring back memories for me, and the guys making the film. Yep. grin

edit: and if anything, at least give Stallone credit for single handedly ending the cold-war when he fought Dolph Lundgren in Russia. People can change.

I liked it overall, but yeah, it's not something I'm going to watch repeatedly. One action movie I liked from the 80's was Predator. It sort of starts out as a mindless action flick ("I ain't got time to bleed" lol), then suddenly the big buff guys are getting killed one by one by something even deadlier than they are.

I wish Expendables had something that made it a little different from those action movies. I don't really remember any memorable scenes from it, just a bunch of stuff blowing up. Stallone should've went Rambo 1 on them, setting up traps and what not instead of just blasting them all away.

I think this is what they call "mixed critism" grin .

Personally, the movie was poor.
My expectation of "best movie ever" was not present; in fact, I was hoping for that over the top action. We know that movies like these don't have to have some well-thought plot.

However, I didn't really get the action I expected either, especially for the massive amount of well known actors. Ironically, I kind of understand why Jean Claude Van DAMN declined participation.

There was an attempt of bring some reallife drama, if I understood it correctly. Jason Statham (spelling) had that little love game that only ended up as some lousy knight taking the princess away. They could have totally left that out.

There were so many great characters they could have given humorous merc dialogs too.

And there were massive plotholes too. Even other, lesser action movies didn't have such plotholes or truly mindless moments (the plane/transporter scene was jumping the shark) unless it really involved over the top stuff.

A only moment I recall that was funny and cool was when (I forgot his name) baldy afro Dad from "Everybody Hates Chris" / Old Spice ADs http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MG0VGbcMeNM
just came walking in with his 12g AutoShotgun going CHOWM!CHOWM!CHOWM!CHOWM!CHOWM!CHOWM!CHOWM!CHOWM!, everybody getting killed (that was okay, they were surprised ^^) and then the whole thing from Steve Austin's point of view. Austin's character was like WTF.

The action scenes, foremost the close combat scenes were okay. I don't get why everything has to be CGI spam nowadays but I guess that's the modern thing after all. The elite force thing was kinda cool when Stallone and Statham pwned that troop of soldiers. Kinda made me want to play Jagged Alliance 2 again xD

What I found weird was that scene where they all were tagging tons of C4s throughout the entire complex of the palast. I know they took down a few guards silently, but ffs, there should have been enough guards to at least notice the new black smoke detectors.
Like "Que Eso, Amigoooo?" ; "Yo no se, Hombre" BOOOOOOOMB!

A popcorn flick indeed, but I strongly suggest to what other DVD movies featuring these stars as solo pwntrains. Okay Van Damme wasn't in this movie, but that Universal Soldier movie with Stone Cold Steve Austin as one of the baddy U-Soldier was cool. It had some plot, a lot of gag moments and a lot of EXPLOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOSIOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONS!

Cheesy and yet, a bit more efficient than Expendables sad .

It was awesome for what it was, cameos of the horrible fight movies from my childhood. If anyone else but these people did it, it would have been terribad without the nostalgia.

watched it last night

It was cool watching all the actors in it. I'm not a guy and I liked how action packed it was. You gotta admit, that one guy's weapon was way cool. I thogut Mickey Rourke would have a better part. I have to say it was well worth netflixing.

I'm old and think Stallone is hot too! happy
