Due to suspicious activity, the Battle.net account xxxx@yyyy.com has been locked. To restore access to this account, please follow these steps:

Step 1: Secure Your Computer

In the event that your computer has been infected with malicious software such as a keylogger or trojan, simply changing your password may not deter future attacks without first ensuring that your computer is free from these programs. Please visit our Account Security website to learn how to secure your computer from unauthorized access.

Step 2: Secure Your E-mail Account

After you have secured your computer, please create a new password for your e-mail account since it may also be compromised. Be sure to check your e-mail filters and rules and look for any e-mail forwarding rules that you did not create. For more information on securing your e-mail account, visit this Support page.

Step 3: Choose a New Password

You must change your password in order to resume using this Battle.net account. Please click this link to choose a new password:

*Note that your former password no longer grants access to Battle.net account management, World of Warcraft, or any other login-protected Battle.net account service.

If you still have questions or concerns after following the steps above, feel free to contact Customer Support at http://us.blizzard.com/support/article.xml?locale=en_US&articleId=20606.

Sincerely,
The Battle.net Account Team

Tried to login this morning, got a popup message saying my activities had changed or something like that. The email above followed about 30 seconds later. Links are legit but not included. I did reset password and access is restored, but anyone know what this is all about? Having been hacked once in the past (F U Curse Gaming), I'm paranoid now.

It's getting harder to tell if Blizzard messages are real or not. When in doubt, i head to battle.net and login. No trouble detected everytime.

If you've always logged into the computer that you used then yes, it is strange. But I have run into this before since 4.0.1. Working as it should though. My brother normally logs in while at his home in Utah. This week he tried to logged in from California since they're visiting family for the holidays. Well it locked his account exactly like that. All he had to do was change his password and it unlocked immediately. I'm guessing that it will add to your unseen account profile that you sometimes log in from this new location.

It's just another step they've taken to prevent account hackings.

Edit: And you should take appropriate measures to clean your computer and change your passwords as suggested in the email. If you don't have an authenticator it's likely someone may have tried to hack you.

That's the impression I'm getting, though I have logged in from here before (work).

Have you logged in from work since 4.0.1 or 4.0.3 have been deployed? It may be that it hadn't registered in their system that way yet.

Not since 4.0.3 maybe, definitely since 4.01.

Edit: just out of paranoia, changed bnet password again but with resonable password, authenticator, and some semblance of internet security, I think I'm fairly safe.

Agreed. I think you're safe as well. With an authenticator, you're much less likely to be successfully hacked and I personally think that you logging in from work just wasn't in their system yet. Now it is.

same thing happend to me, I was required to change my password before I logged in. I got the message at the login screen though and was directed from there to check my e-mail so I was pretty sure it was legit. Changed my password and have not had any problems since.

I have an authenticator so I thought that maybr someone had tried to brute force the account and did not get in because of my authenticator. Blizzard caught it and locked my account.

You're fine. A friend of mine recently logged in from my other friends house, 10 miles away, and was immediately greeted by this as well. Their activity detection software got kicked into overdrive, apparently. I fully expect to get it when I log in tomorrow from Michigan, (I live in Florida, visiting Michigan currently).

Exactly. My wife logged into her account with her new laptop in a different location. Sure enough, she got this message a well.

Seems Blizzard is being extra safe lately.

Have an authenticator and the same thing happened to me while in Algeria recently. Obviously very far from my normal login location so account was locked and I had to change password to fix. When I got back to the States I had to go through the process again even though I normally log in and have many times from my house here.

So, I don't think it keeps a history of where you log in legitimately from. It just locks it if you change login places. It freaked me out the first time but I am ok with this security feature.

This happens if you use a computer with a different IP address. Sometimes (rarely) that number can get changed. I have a friend who travels and gets this all the time. An authenticator will fix it but it is a pain in the rear to use. Some phones have the ability to run a program that generates the number. You might want to look into that.

While the authenticator is a pain in the rear it provides peace of mind and a good level of protection from account thieft. I just wish they would let me change accounts without having to use it.

This happened on one of my accounts(weird though, since they all use the same battle.net login) that has been closed for months.

Made sure it was legit then went through the procedure to unlock it again.

It is trigger by IP changes from you last few login.

Authentication don't fix this issue. You will still get Account locked and need to reset password to login.

The auto-locking mechanism is really silly because you need to answer your secret questions each time to reset the password --- increasing the risk of keyloggers stealing this information.
