Subject: Lament here if you were forced to cancel due to traffic shaping (4.0.1 lag) :(
Faced with unplayable and unrelenting lag issues after 4.0.1, I was forced to cancel my account and let the days slowly tick away until, alas, I cannot play/post anymore.

Spent a good 15 hours researching what the problem was and after figuring it out, was told by my ISP that it was blizzards fault and then by blizzard that it was my ISP's fault.

A polarized political battlefield where the customer is always wrong. cry

If you are experiencing horrible lag during peak hours after 4.0.1 and have troubleshooted your problem to no avail, you're probably lagging because of traffic shaping.

Long story short, blizzard changed their network code in a way that confuses the ISP's latency performance tuner into thinking that your wow connection is P2P data download, so its given bottom of the barrel priority in the queue and you may experience varying degrees of horrendous lag and/or disconnects.

No you can't have my stuff.

That sucks man. Find a new ISP if you can obviously.

Well it's a good thing you only got to 61. Really not walking away from much of an investment. Stop blaming Blizzard. It is not their fault. It is your ISP.

Hmmm...traffic shapers by themselves are a good thing. Are you sure your ISP didn't interpret the patch download (which was gigabytes, after all) as P2P (which it is), and simply put either your line or anything connected to Blizzard on a "bad boy" list? What you're describing isn't traffic shaping, it's classification.

Good luck...

That is your ISPs fault for using crappy QoS software to discourage p2p use. There are better ways, and better ISPs. This is absolutely not Blizzard's fault in any way whatsoever. Sorry that you lose though.

Can't you turn off that background downloader by running WoW.exe directly though?

Well the games been fully downloaded for forever and I have p2p turned off.
I even turned off IPv6 just to be damn sure I wasn't uploading p2p data and that still had no effect.

Though this wouldn't matter anyways, because of their traffic'ing software it would normally give wow game data top priority over any p2p data including the blizzard background downloader.
Thus the problem is that the wow game data itself is being misinterpreted as p2p.

Every primetime the wow tech support forums explode with latency complaints, and I have recognized the symptoms for this, and blizzard is not very good at diagnosing it. So many people are effected by this and don't even know it, so they don't even know enough to know where to begin. All they know is after 4.0.1 they can't play wow anymore.

So there is lag during PRIME TIME!? Crazy!

Seriously though, the client now downloads game data while you play, streaming it sort of. I haven't bother to read how it works because I don't have any problems like you are describing, but I would bet that is the change that broke you.

Idk if you're arguing with me arclite, but they both confirmed the problem was traffic shaping. Are you suggesting its 'my' fault?

Wow, thanks for posting this. I was having the same problem, getting disconnected all the time since 4.0.1...so I unchecked the box for "enable p2p transfer" and seems like everything is working like normal again happy

Get a Verizon Wireless card/USB stick. Problem solved. You probably don't need a huge plan as WoW doesn't seem to do that much data xfer. Alternatively if you have a Verizon cell phone (droid) you can just tether it to your computer and get 'free' Internet. I did this while vacationing in the Outer Banks this year and it worked great. I kept NetCounter going as well and over 1.5 weeks of ~3 hours a day of play I only xfered ~800 megs of WoW data. So as I said above you can pick your plan accordingly and then just account for regular web traffic.

Or just use PDANet to tether via USB. I did that for a month before Verizon got my FiOS installed.

Hell, my wireless routers are prone to hiccups sometimes.

Well gaming off my 3G (attached to my droid) it would from time to time tower hop and I would have to reconnect to WoW. The Verizon wireless USB modems don't have hiccups, at least anymore then any Internet would, as long as you can get a wireless signal.

DirecPath update.

DirecPath: Basically, WOW and other games use Torrents as a mechanism for updating maps, issuing patches and other traffic relating to general gameplay. Torrent traffic is classified as peer to peer, which has a lower cap and priority than game traffic. Eventually the Traffic Shaper gets an update that correctly classifies the new WOW traffic as game traffic. However, if Blizzard makes changes, then the signature is different and can once again be classified as P2P traffic.

This is compounded by the fact that the new Traffic Shaper is running an entirely new operating system with an entirely different way of applying QoS. *myname*, we are still working diligently with the manufacturer on coming up with an optimal configuration. We will keep you inform once this is completed.

Sounds like the guys at your ISP are too busy eating pizza and/or getting off to reruns of "Xena: Warrior Princess" to bother dealing with your WoW problems. Switch your ISP or go with one of the other options the above posters recommended.
