My laptop manufacturer has stopped releasing video drivers. When I go to the video card manufacturers site, the newer drivers won't install and I get the message to get the driver from the laptop manufacturer.

Is there any way to force the system to take the new driver?

This has worked for me:
I would start by googling your notebook model number along with "graphics chip" or something.
Example search: T506E graphics chip

Then look something in the information that says which graphics chip is being used (This notebook uses INTEL G405bxz).

Finally check with the manufacturer of the chip directly to see if they have anything available (or google again)

I can find new drivers for the chipset. Just can't get them to install.

You need to state what graphics chipset it is using.

I figured it out.

When I tried to install it using the .msi installer, the laptop would recognize it as a non-Toshiba driver and reject it.

I dl'd the zip file, unzipped the driver, then used the update driver button in the hardware manager. Seems to have worked.

Exactly.

If you use NVidia, for instance, you can install the NVidia driver by telling Windows you want to choose which hardware to install and selecting a comparable desktop card. When the driver itself starts it will properly recognize your mobile chipset.
