I don't think either method will work very well, but I definitely think if they are left whole, they will explode.

Of course, this is just a guess based on cooking whole tomatoes in a pan.

Putting anything frozen with a high water content directly into frying oil is a bad idea.

Very, very bad.

I completely agree - bad idea!
I know from working with regular sized green tomatoes that you can bread or batter slices and freeze them for frying later. I know that sometimes the insides thaw too quickly and leak into the hot oil, causing a lot of spatter.
It only stands to reason that keeping these little green tomatoes whole will be like having a little ice cube covered in batter - it will melt, some will leak, and that influx of water into hot oil could be very dangerous.

Hubby tried 6 little green tomatoes last night. He froze them for an hour or so, battered them, then refroze them. After another hour or so, he took them out and dropped them into hot oil. (I made him take it outside!) He stayed outside with them in the oil for a few minutes, then brought them back inside. (Um... melting takes time...) He put them back on the heat for a minute, then went back outside with them.
Three of them he left alone, other than flipping them over.
Three of them he poked with a fork. When poked, the guts leaked into the oil and made it foam up a bit.
He is now convinced that this is a total success, on his part.
I am convinced that they were not frozen long enough. I also think that we would very likely be cooking more than 6 at a time.

When I think about doing up a batch of fried foods, I know that not every mushroom splits; not every piece of chicken springs a leak; not every chunk in a batch has a rupture. I just think that the few tomatoes that do rupture into the oil could very well cause a serious danger.
But, for now, he wins half the battle. Any of the tomatoes that were smaller than a white grape were left whole. Any that were larger were cut in half. I win half the battle because anytime we have the whole ones, he will be doing the cooking and the cleanup. He wins half the battle because cooking them outside will give him another reason to cook on the grill in the dead of winter. LOL

Find a video of someone deep frying a frozen turkey on their deck; that'll give you the idea of what'll happen.

If he's determined to do it, make sure the fryer is outside, not on your deck and there's no flammable objects within a 7' radius.

Also, have some baking soda/flour on hand in case a fire does start.

I tried the frozen turkey analogy. His response, "Well, that's a whole lot bigger."
I surrender. All the tomatoes are frozen - they sound and act like marbles LOL. He can do whatever he wants with them, as long as he does it outside. With the couple that did burst when he pierced them, I thought he'd be more convinced, but hmph. So, he got the little buggers frozen whole like he wanted them, I cut in half those that were too big, and we'll wait and see just how bad it is when he decides to fry them.
