Subject: Windows 7 and AC Dual Client
So here is a puzzler:

I recently purchased a new computer that runs Windows 7. Naturally, I want to play my favourite game on it.

I installed AC Throne of Destiny from my CDs.
Then I accessed the game to download all the subsequent patches/updates.
Then I logged in a character. (So far so good.)
Subsequently I installed Decal and AC Dual Client. They are installed in C:\Games\etc etc in separate directories.

- I am able to log in AC on one account.
- I am able to log in AC on one account with Decal running (and no specific plug-ins installed).
- I am able to log in AC on one account using AC Dual Client.
- I am able to log in AC on one account using AC Dual Client with Decal running (and no specific plug-ins installed).
- I am able to use AC Dual Client to get to the character screen on multiple accounts.

However: as soon as I try to log in any character when I have more than one account open, I get yellow bar-then red bar-then crash.

I have looked in the Dual Client forums and on AC Vault Technical Boards for a solution, but have not been able to find one.

- I tried giving AC and Dual Client firewall exceptions – no effect.
- I tried running AC and DC as an Administrator. It appeared to have no effect on AC, but it messed up DC - so no help.
- I tried changing the port forwarding. I think I was successful, but it didn’t seem to help so I reversed the changes
- I have uninstalled and reinstalled DC in different directories – no improvement.

As I have five active accounts, I REALLY NEED to be able to play on more than one account at the same time.
- I could set up my old computer as well so I could play AC on two accounts at the same time; but AC’s performance on my old machine wasn’t uber – hence the reason for the upgrade.
- I REALLY rely on AC DC for a positive playing experience. If I can’t get it to work, I may be forced to limit my playing time or shift to another game entirely – something I don’t want to do.

PLEASE HELP!

I wasn't sure how useful it would be as I'm not sure that it's a Decal issue, but your wish is my command:

the Yellow/Red link problems are almost always network related. Maybe the Auto-Port isn't enabled or functioning correctly.

no telling what kind of issues these two failures are causing they should be deleted as they look like failed or incomplete un-installs.

Any time ANYONE posts on this board, we usually ask for an export, since this is a "AC Utilities" forum and not an "AC Troubleshooting" forum. 99% of the people that post here have problems because they did not install something properly. Posting an "export" helps us determine some of those problems. In your particular case, I would venture to guess that Drakier is correct. Though the plugins that you did not properly uninstall might cause problems in the future, neither of which are the Virindi Views, which is the leading cause of problems in the improperly uninstalled plugins situation.

Not sure if this helps any but, up until the network code patch that Turbine did, I always had to change the network ports manually in the UserPreferences.ini file.

[Net]
ComputeUniquePort=False
BindInterface=
UserSpecifiedPort=9000

Make one client 9000, then on the second client change the number to 9010 (I allow 10 ports in between clients)

Like I said, this probably has nothing to do with your problem, but it is worth a shot.

yeah.. that is always a possibility. Turn off Auto-Port completely, and manually specify a separate port each client.... although that is what Auto-Port is supposed to do.. there is no guarantee it works in Vista or Win7. That code hasn't been touched since XP so I can't really say for sure that it does anything for ports or not.

WhereAC should tell you for certain since they use the same code however. You can run WhereAC and take notes on what it says, then launch a client fully to the Character Select screen and run WhereAC again and compare to previous notes. Port and Path should have changed after launching the first client.

I just did the same thing with my son's laptop that is running Windows 7. I followed yaroz's steps that he posted in this thread:

http://vnboards.ign.com/ac_utilities/b5432/113031404/p1/?30

I haven't had any issues with ACDC, but I usually only have two accounts active when I'm muling.

I had a similar problem and setting my path manually to my 2nd AC folder always fixed it for loading a second acc.

Subject: Windows 7 and AC Dual Client
Report from Day Two (sorta) of My Nightmare:

(1) I uninstalled everything - AC, Decal and AC Dual Client.
(2) I downloaded AC from Turbine's site and installed it into a subdirectory of C:\Games. It did not run.
(3) I gave AC firewall access. It ran.
(4) I downloaded AC Dual Client and installed it into a subdirectory of C:\Games.
(5) I downloaded WhereAC and installed it into a subdirectory of C:\Games.
(6) I created 4 subirectories for AC and copied all of the files of the main AC directory into all of the subdirectories. I also gave firewall access to ACclient.exe and ACLauncher.exe from each of the subdirectories, just to be certain.
(7) I logged in to AC through ACDC on one account. I got a character screen, then logged in a character successfully.
(8) I logged in to AC through ACDC on a second account. I got a character screen, then logged in, only to yellow link, red link, then get kicked out.
(9) I tried again while running WhereAC to monitor the results. For the second account the port read 9005 and the path was correct.
(10) I tried turning off auto port and entering in ports 9000, 9005, 9010, 9015 and 9020 for each account. For the second account, I got a character screen, then logged in, only to yellow link, red link, then get kicked out. WhereAC showed the right path but no port.
(11) I tried turning off auto port and using the other (auto port check?) option. Similarly, when I tried to log in on the second account, WhereAC showed the right path but no port.
(12) I installed AC alone (from discs) on a second computer connected to the same homegroup/router also running Windows 7 into a subdirectory of C:\Games. It did not run.
(13) I gave AC firewall access. It ran.
(14) I got to the character screen and logged in a character successfully.
(15) I exited from the second computer and logged into the game on my first computer again. I then tried to log into the game on the second computer. I could access the character screen (I think); but when I logged in I got yellow link, red link, then got kicked out.
(16) I edited the .ini file on the second computer to set the port to 9005. I could access the character screen (I think); but when I logged in I got yellow link, red link, then got kicked out.

Then I started to search the Net once more for solutions.
(17) I tried installing NET Framework 1.1 and the Service Pack, even though there have been issues with Windows 7. Having these present seemed to preclude ANY access to the game, so I uninstalled them.

When I gave up last night in sorrow and frustration, I had managed to return to my starting point: I can access the game on one account (whether using AC DC or not), apparently on port 9000.

I was hoping that I could win the lottery last night so I could fly Drakier (or some other sage) from wherever they live to Toronto to fix this for me. No such luck.

I will continue to seek advice and/or search the Net and/or consult Turbine, but my patience is not infinite.

I NEED to play this game on multiple accounts at the same time. I BOUGHT my new computer largely so I could handle recent graphics changes in AC. I will be VERY IRRITATED if I can't fix this soon. I may very well QUIT the game as a result and Turbine will lose the monthly revenue from 5 accounts.

I am posting all of this partly so that when/if I quit people will at least understand that I did everything possible to keep playing before I left.

Uldar

When you say you gave firewall access are you talking about windows firewall or a firewall built into your router?

Umm, you *NEED* .net 1.1 for ACDC, I know I was unable to use ACDC without it... It's listed on http://acdualclient.drakier.com/ as a req (the various Major versions of .net are SEPERATE bits of software)
If you are missing Either .net 1.1 or the VB6 runtime files you *WILL* have issues, as stuff will not work. Usually, for me, missing one or the other of those 2 installs meant ACDC would NOT let a second client in even if it worked for a single client (usually it was the VB6 as I KNEW I needed the .net 1.1 and had it installed already).
I currently have AC, Decal and Drakiers Dual Client on 3 diff machines running Win 7, 2 are Win 7 x64 Professional and the 3rd is Win 7 Starter (netbook :^) I did the whole thing of install AC, get it working first, install decal and get it with no plugin's working, and then get ACDC going. The Port managing feature *Does* work for *me*, so it is possible to get it going, I'm not sure what is causing your issue. If you want an Export to see what I have installed verus your install, please let me know and I'll post one up (or it any of the trouble shooters want to see one from a working Win 7 x64 Install). My bigger machines are even setup a little differently path wise, one is on a boot partition the other has in on a secondary partition......

Oh, ACDC does REQ some of these checked on the options screen or it acts funny (aka doesn't work)

Advanced setup
Warn of dupe path paths.
Enable injection (*Important* for Win 7 at least I believe)
Enable polling Path Detection
Enable hook path Detection
Enable Filter Path Detection

Subject: Windows 7 and AC Dual Client
Admittedly I'm not familiar with the various Net Frameworks. When I was initially setting up my computer for AC, etc, I downloaded and installed what seemed to be the "latest" version, which I believe is 4.

- Will that suffice, or must it be 1 specifically?

- I am most fussed about being able to dual (or multiple) client, so I haven't been worrying about a Decal install until I get AC DC working. Do I need to install Decal and get it running BEFORE I do AC DC, even though AC DC is not Decal-dependent?

.Net Frameworks are not backwards compatible so just because you have 4 installed, if a program needs 1.1, you still need to have 1.1 installed.

You don't need to have Decal installed for Dual Client. You could just uninstall Decal and all plugins until you get Dual Client running without a problem.

You may have to open it on both, but the router has to setup either way. If you are not familiar with forwarding ports on a router the following website walks you through it step-by-step.

http://www.portforward.com - scroll to the bottom of the first page and select your router to get started.

It is recommended to get Decal installed first since ACDualClient does attempt to use the Decal Filter as a way to monitor which client is loaded ingame at the time. While it is certainly not required, it is definitely recommended.

I recommend you look at the sticky post titled "List of links for decal and associated necessities.. " I did a lot of work putting together the list of links for both 32 and 64bit OS'. Go through and install EVERYTHING for your OS.

Also, what type of router are you running? There are simply some routers that will not support running multiple clients. If you want to try a new router, the Linksys WRT54G definitely works with multiple PCs/clients without any special configurations, and you can find refurbs for $20ish or new for $40ish.

Ok - I uninstalled everything then followed Yaroz' list.

The result:
- AC vanilla logged out the first time I tried it; but subsequently worked.
- I installed Decal. I was able to log into AC with Decal on, with no plug-ins installed.
- I installed AC DC. I was able to log in one account, but the others lagged out.

Then I tried setting everything (AC, Decal and AC DC) to run as administrator and in Windows XP Service Pack 3 emulation. AC DC did not appear to like that, so I turned both features off again for it alone.

I can still log in only one account in AC DC.

Being a stubborn person, I am willing to go through the entire exercise just once more, running EVERYTHING as an administrator just to see if it helps, but before I do that I thought I would drop by here again and provide my latest Decal dump, seeking any additional thoughts/advice:

The export isn't showing the date for your video drivers, which is kinda strange. I doubt that is causing your problems, but I would get the latest video drivers from your video card manufacturer website just to be on the safe side.

the export looks much cleaner, and as you can log into ac via ac-dc but 'lag' out it sounds more like a conection issue then ac/ac-dc.

UNLESS when you installed ac-dc the /2 directory didnt get fully copied over.

Another thought/possibility:

I am currently running the 64 bit version of Windows Home Premium. Would it help/make sense to spend the $150 to upgrade to Professional, Enterprise or Ultimate so I can download and run Windows XP mode (thus allowing me perhaps to run things like AC DC in XP like I did before on my old computer?)

If you want to spend money, just paypal it to me. Otherwise, no, there is no reason to pay extra.. unless it's to pay for a new router. I suggest the Linksys WRT54G.

If you want to test if your Router is at fault, simply unplug the PC from the Router and plug it straight into your Internet Connection (if that is possible).

In some cases, the modem/router are linked together, and you can't do that specifically. In those cases, I HIGHLY recommend disabling any "Routing" features on the modem and turn it into what they call "Bridge Mode" where it acts like nothing more than a dumb gateway.

If you can get it to work without routing, with a direct connection, then my guess is it is your Router that is the problem. If you plug straight into the internet without a router and get a public IP (an address that starts with something other than 192. or 10.) and it still doesn't work, then it might be something with your PC specifically.

I'd recommend doing a lot more troubleshooting before going out and spending any money on anything. If it isn't the router that is causing the problem, then you'll go buy a $50 router and end up wasting $50 because it wasn't the issue, etc.

Thanks for the suggestion, Drakier. I did plug directly into my modem and still had the problem. So that seems to confirm that it is not a router issue.
