Subject: Returning player after 6 years...need some help with tech issues
I'm running on vista and I've spent the last two days trying to figure out what could be the cause of me not being able to receive packets, subsequently, losing connection to server. I can get past character selection screen but from there on, I have a black screen aside from the health/stam/mana bars and backpack, etc (though its all empty and not showing anything of my character's).

I've reloaded the game into C:\Games, gotten rid of my antivirus, both; excepted acclient thru the firewall and turned the computer firewall off, portforwarded my router and also turned off the firewall there, and ensured I have vista service pack 2.

What else am I missing?

Did you forward the port to your computer from your router?
http://www.portforward.com (on the first page scroll to the bottom to select your router to get started)

After you forward the port, usually 9000-9013, open up the userpreferences.ini file in you mydocuments/asheron's call folder and edit the port to one of those of those ports you forwarded. Just one port is needed per computer.

That's the first I've heard of the userpreferences.ini step. Ill give it a shot tomorrow. Thanks!

Where it says "ComputeUniquePort=False" would I just change false to a port number, or is it a little more in depth than that?

change that to true and the line below that is where you put the port i believe. It should say something about a port on the line.

Just tried portforwarding and changing the userpreferences.ini file, but I'm seeing a same issue as when I tried portforwarding yesterday w/out the .ini file-change. I get to the screen with the vials that fill with blue for connecting/patching, but they do nothing and I end up with a message that says "failed to connect to server. please try again in a few minutes." whereas when I take away my forwarding changes and leave everything as is...I can get past character selection.

I've tried this many times and a few different ways, but from your knowledge, does it sound like it's due to an error on my part with the portforwarding from router? It seems quite simple to portforward with my router so I'd like to think I've got it correctly.

I don't really see anything that should stop you from connecting. The video drivers are way out of date, but I doubt that is causing your problem. It doesn't hurt to update your video drivers though just to check.

Do you connect wireless or wired? If your connecting wireless try connecting directly to the router and see if the same things happens. There are a couple routers that have problems with connecting through a wireless connection.

Yeah, really I'm just ready for a new computer. 3 years is a good life.

Anyway, yeah I connect wirelessly. I connected wired yesterday, but hadn't considered it since the .ini tip. Thanks I'll try that and the drivers update.
