http://msn.foxsports.com/cfb/story/NCAA-announces-punishments-for-USC-061010

after this story, you get the hear the take from Carrol and Kiffin...its amazing to me the double-talk that comes out of the mouths of some. you cannot tell me that Carrol didnt know about what was going on with Bush?! in all of this he won! he was able to land a decent NFL job and avoid the sanctions that he probably knew were coming.

Kiffin talks about how great the program will continue to be..i have no doubt that USC will again be a factor, but can he honestly think that it wont effect recruiting? c'mon! its going too, but its nice to say and at least hope for.

I think the punishment is pretty fair. It sucks for the kids that are there now being punished for stuff that went down when they were in middle school but they also had to know something was going to happen when they signed to SC. It will be interesting to see if many players end up transferring, i certainly wouldn't want to stick around if i were an upperclassmen that just lost all potential of a post season.

I also think Pete's comments are classic, he knew the hammer was coming and that it was coming down hard, absolutely shocked my ass. He might not have known exactly what was going on, but he had to have known some shady crap was going down.

The NCAA came down too hard on small schools for too long while letting the big time programs skate by. As Jerry Tarkanian once put it, "the NCAA was so mad at Kentucky, it gave Cleveland State two more years of probation"

Other than getting the Heisman and the national championships taken away, I don't know what else should be done to punish these guys. I know that everyone complains the perpetrators walk away scott free, but the main thing here is preventing it from happening again. It's not like it's a criminal offense. The burden is on the university to make sure they hire the right people, and their football program is being run the correct way.

now that is funny, i never have seen that quote..which is hilarious! laugh

Ynisfre, i hadnt read that his Heisman has been taken away, by the club? i have heard that it is speculation, but not a fact? i do however think he should give it up, its really the only punishment that could be given to him. i really hate the shady crap that goes on in the NCAA programs, although Carrol moved on, i wish sanctions would follow the coach...such as Calipari, dude is a gangster...leaves schools in his wake and nothing is done about it. if the sanctions would follow the coach, their might be a moment of pause before some shady crap happened.

I was just referring to the possibility of it being taken away.

I was having that discussion about Bush yesterday with a co-worker.

Its not the Heisman trophy committees job to determine if he should play or not, but to find the best player in football. Whether or not he should have been playing is irrelevant (to a degree). He played and they felt he was the best player in football that year. Now, the NCAA comes in and says ok well now you have no stats and no wins, does that change his perception among Heisman voters? I would think so but does that change his actual performance on the field?

The real problem with stripping him of his Heisman is that there is no precedent or procedure to do so. Sure the voters would not have given him the award in retrospect now, but its not an award that is renewed at any point. And think of the irony! If they did strip him of the trophy, they could then give it to the second place person (Vince Young). The loss of that Heisman gave us one of the best games in college football history! In the end Young got the last laugh at the Heisman voters by taking the National Championship! Now they go back years later and say.. um.. hey Vince...

I agree it shouldn't be a mandatory thing... I was just using it to make a larger point that there's really nothing you can do to Bush or Carroll other than strike their names from whatever record books you have, which, as we already know, isn't much of a deterrent to guys breaking NCAA rules. The only way this kind of thing is going to be curtailed is by holding the schools accountable for who they hire and how they police them. It may look bad that the "guilty" don't have any real punishment, and that other kids suffer, but there's really not much else they can do.

Heard today that the NCAA only really came down hard on USC because they don't like Lane Kiffin. While I initially dismissed that as conspiracy theory, it might actually have some validity to it.

I mean.. 30 scholarships.. wow

USC got the hammer because it was not just this one major incident, there were several major incidents. The school was obviously out of control, and the commitee did the only thing it really has the power to do. I agree with Juzam's comments on the Heisman, regardless of his eligiblity, Bush was the best player that season. It is not the job of the Heisman commitee to determine eligibility, but to simply award the best player with a trophy, which they did.
