Since this genre is female first person dominated it stands to reason that they would eventually whittle away at my bastion of manliness, but I am finding myself enjoying increasingly romantic works.

I just started reading Kelley Armstrong's 'Women of the Underworld' and despite the main focus being on this woman's relationships I loved the book. It still has the action element, so it's certainly not a romance novel but all of the characterization and character growth surrounds her love life.

Can somebody suggest some really misogynistic authors for me to read? I might have to reread Wheel of Time or something.

You should read Robert E. Howards Conan books. That should put you back in testosteronville. Just make sure you read the ones by Howard. Its okay if they're edited by Lynn, Carter, or deCamp. Just don't read any bad knock offs. Robert Jordan in particular wrote what i thought were some really bad Conan books.

Sword of Truth is always good for a little misogyny as all men prove their superiority to women by raping them. Of course, after reading them again it's likely you'll begin to show other symptoms, like obsessively preaching directly out of "Atlas Shrugged" to people who, largely, aren't that interested any longer.

I considered mentioned Sword of Truth along with Wheel of Time but Goodkind has a real S&M dominatrix thing going on as well. Every female character in the book except for Kahlan may get raped (and she comes damn close) but so does Richard.

Plus, the ingrained misogyny in WoT is much more profound that Goodkind's rape and S&M fantasies.

Yes, though there are some minor cliff-hangers. It is a lot like Dresden or Hallows, she writes a complete plot arc and each book is a self contained story, but the over-arcing story continues and she will set up the next book at the end of the current novel.

I have Outcast book 1 but I've bought so many books since Christmas I haven't gotten around to it. After burning through the 8 weather warden books in as many days I figure I deserve a break. I just hope the author doesn't start doing cross-overs. I don't like what Patricia Briggs did with her spin-off series.

I enjoyed Night Shift by Lilith Saintcrow... very chicky though she is a superhuman hunter of things that go bump in the night so that makes it easier to swallow. tongue

I liked it enough to get the others of the series but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Urban fantasy....

explain it to me? I'm not sure I quite follow and I don't want to jump into the conversation without knowing whether or not I've read any.

its fantasy set in current day. jim butchers dresden files, kim harrisons hollows, rob thurmans cal leandros, and rachel caines weather wardens are all examples of urban fantasy. its a type of writing that crosses over the paranormal genre to some extent.

Female leading characters written by men usually annoy me. Male leading characters written by females always, always (always) piss me off.

Off topic, but your thread made me think of it.

On topic now:

I hate urban fantasy now. The fad has started to rub me the wrong way, initially just by taking space on the shelves in the book stores away from my traditional fantasy, and now by just being mostly crap. I'm guessing that only 1 out of every 4 or 5 books on the shelves that I pick up from that sub-genre are anything but utter tripe.

I just looked up Gor, I am going to get the first book but I highly suspect that it is going to be just a bit over the top.

Ah! Thanks Grim. I've read a couple dresden files and they were okay for me. I don't think I've read enough of the genre to have an opinion. Though, I'll definitely check it out because now I'm realy curious.

a lot of the stuff by neil gaiman is urban fantasy. the only one that isn't, that i can recall off the top of my head, is stardust.

edit: ok wtf? a prime example of urban fantasy is neverwhere, a book which you hold in very high regard! you are clearly a crazy person.

I just read the first book and I did like it a lot. Having read her other series first I think my perspective is too skewed to decide rather or not I like it more. I did feel like it had a hell of a lot more cliff hanger than I am used to from her books and I am concerned with rather or not the gimmick that makes the series endearing (the demi-God made human with no real understanding of humanity) can survive the character development.

I'm curious, if this series continues, how Caine will stop from Cassiel just being a carbon copy of Joanne from the Weather Warden books.

I would argue that it isn't. Rowling's goes out of her way to avoid the modern world, in many ways to the point of absurdity. Anything modern is replaced with something magical. Though that slips more in the later books I suppose.

Perhaps I am responding too seriously to your post.

well, all the religious wackjobs call it satanic because it exists inside our world. that's my understanding of it at least. the start of each book, when he's with his aunt and uncle, is very urban fantasy imo though. at least for the first 4.

In Harry Potter the mundane world is almost the fantasy world. Those sections are apart from the normal story, they are the abnormal preludes before we enter the 'real' world. I agree there are 'urban fantasy' elements to the books and in the strictest sense it could be classified as 'urban fantasy' but I think the spirit of the series is the exact opposite.

If Harry Potter is urban fantasy than so is the Chronicles of Narnia.

You want an emasculating urban read, pick up Puzo's the Fortunate Pilgrim. Granted, it's not fantasy. It's not really fiction either, but it's a good one.

Have to lump the Xanth Chronicles in there if you're going to call Harry Potter and Narnia urban fantasy. Mundania (visited a few times) was our mundane little place.

xanth is a stretch i think but some of his other series like the incarnations of immortality would definitely fall into an urban fantasy definition.
