http://www.deadline.com/hollywood/its-a-bird-its-a-plane-its-chris-nolan-hell-mentor-superman-3-0-while-preparing-3rd-batman/

"Superman to soar again on the Big Screen, and the studio has turned to Chris Nolan to mentor development of the movie. Our insiders say that the brains behind rebooted Batman has been asked to play a "godfather" role and ensure The Man Of Steel gets off the ground after a 3 1/2-year hiatus."

"...we doubt Nolan would direct. This wouldn't be a sequel to Superman Returns but a completely fresh franchise."

I think this is positive.

The problem is they don't know what to do with Superman. He is a relic from a squarer past in many ways. You just can't bank 200 million dollars on a movie that's patriotic and sincere. I guess you could get Michael Bay to do it, but he's contractually obligated to film a scene in a strip club, so that just won't work.

Seriously, I'd rather have a creative guy "godfather" it than a studio suit- but I don't know that Nolan's approach will be a cure all. If he goes with the Batman route of trying to make it feel more "real world" there's nothing inherent about that which will make the film better. If the film goes into what it would really be like to be a God amongst mortals, well, that could be neat, but it's not like it's unique to Superman. You could make that movie about any number of Superheroes.

Well I'm hoping that the rebooted Superman won't leave magic crystals lying around. I couldn't shut my brain off to accept the fact that Superman just left these island growing artifact accessible to just anyone who drunkenly stumbled into his lair. I also found it was interesting that Lex knew what was in an Igloo on top of the world.

Flying and shooting lasers out of his eyes was fine and dandy though.

Have you seen Superman II?

I think the entire movie relied on that.
The crystals' purpose, Lois's "Night with Superman" article, Luthor's knowledge of the crystals...

I've seen Superman II, but beyond Superman throwing a saran wrap shield at Zod (or his cronies) I couldn't tell you much about it.

Lets get something straight...

Superman 2 is one of, if not the best superhero movie ever made. It gave us the first ever true clash of super powered beings. The problem is that the director Richard Donner, who did Superman 1 as well, was replaced about 3/4 of the way through filming Superman 2. The producers, the Salkinds, brought in Richard Lester to finish it because Donner wanted a more serious movie, and they wanted to turn it into a slapstick comedy. That is where the saran wrap "S" insignia came from, and the ice cream hitting the guy in the face, and basically any other cheesy moment in the entire film.

For Superman 3 they filmed the entire thing with Lester and did it their way, and we all know how that turned out. doh!

Sometimes they have to put a movie out just to hang onto the rights. Many of them have a requirement to keep the franchise active or lose it.

Then make a sequel.

Making the same movie over and over is almost as stupid as the people who go and see every one.

I agree with Yoss. 1 bad movie does not mean a reboot is necessary. Learn from your mistakes with the crappy movie, then fix them and continue on to the new material. And get some actual comic book writers in to pen them, ones that understand the source material or perhaps wrote it in the first place.

Gotta watch the Richard Donner release of Superman 2.
It was awesome.
It cuts out a lot of the cheese, especially the plastic S and Non's baby-ish-ness.

While I do agree with you that I'd prefer to see some new adventures, there is something to be said about the same timeless story being told throughout the ages, each storyteller with their own unique versions and twists.

I hear they are down to 2 plots.

plot 1: Nobody has any kryptonite. Superman wins.

plot 2: Somebody has some kryptonite. Superman loses. (until later when he gets saved, and everybody forgets about the kryptonite.)

I can understand a reboot after a franchise has sat dormant for a decade or more but overall I just wish they'd create new adventures, movies now usually are less than 90 min so watching them re-create the fall of krypton, kent farm yada yada just seems like a waste of precious time.
Studio execs don't realize the reason we all rabidly lined up for 3 back to back movies of LOTR was because the story was so compelling.

You make it seem like movies are getting shorter. They're not. Superman Returns was almost 2 1/2 hours. Here's a graph of the average movie length of the top films of each decade.

10s ¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦ 79 minutes
20s ¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦ 98 minutes
30s ¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦ 96 minutes
40s ¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦ 109 minutes
50s ¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦ 114 minutes
60s ¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦ 127 minutes
70s ¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦ 125 minutes
80s ¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦ ¦ 129 minutes
90s ¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦ 127 minutes
00s ¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦¦ ¦ 129 minutes

Not that a disagree with your point. I don't need to see the fall of Krypton recreated every time they make a Superman movie. But they'll certainly have a lot more than 90 minutes to tell whatever it is they want to tell.

Yeah, pretty much any big budget movie these days is a minimum two hours and usually more. Hell, Transformers 2 was over 2.5 hours of nothing but stuff blowing up.

To be honest I thought they were or maybe it's just the ones I've seen that were short.
Nice graphic though..thanks for that!
Sometime I'll have to check movie times that I've seen in the theaters by decade and see how it compares to your data. Although I will admit to having sat through more than a few movies that I wished had ended WAY sooner hehe.
