It takes a lot for me to bash a game into the mud but in all honesty, I can only give this game a 2 maybe a 3 out of 10 rating. The concept was good: Let’s take Mass Effect, Mix it with Pirates of the Burning Seas, and throw in a little bit of EVE and City of Heroes / Villians, and call it Star Trek Online. We can market it for all the Trekkie geeks out there, and it should create a great fanfare, much like SWG did! The game dynamics are downright horrible. The ship movement is horrible. The graphics are disastrous and yet the excuse is that the game is still in beta… beta.. with less than 2 weeks to go before the game goes live.

Let’s say you are in combat (which you move to on a chess board looking galactic map). Once in the pvp areas or battle it’s hard to target and focus on a ship, and suddenly your camera will toggle and stare behind you. Often your ship gets fired on and moves into ‘evasive maneuvers’ with you losing all control. The fight of zerging ships and focusing with people on 1 target and assisting down the line is fun, but it’s not as exciting as every other game. Then there is ground combat. Ok.. you can roam freely with your “away” team but the combat is basically click and push. No real sport in hiding and firing, not your Call of Duty atmosphere. It’s basically stand still and shoot, no kiting schematics no planning etc. In close combat you can push another 2 buttons if that.. but it’s relatively boring.

The quest system is downright HORRIBLE. Same stuff over and over. Go to this system, escort this person, or beam to this planet and chase this guy around. There is more variance in quests in Star Wars Rebel Assault, or the old Tie Fighter games than there is in this entire excuse for an MMO. The grouping system is horrible. You ‘group’ and move into a quest and you are overwhelmed for basic storyline quests, meaning you either have to wait and wait for more people (like old school master levels) or you have to do something else – and often are told that you cannot progress unless you finish the quest that requires 20+ people…. So you are stuck.

I will honestly say that Warhammer & The Obama Administration are more successful than Star Trek Online. With only 2 weeks left before the games goes live, I doubt there will be any way this game will be smoothly fixed and ran by launch time. I played this game in closed beta and open beta hoping it would get better, and it hasn’t thus far. Trekkies… my heart goes out to you all, as your lil Starfleet tears will pour once you discover why it’s best to not go boldly where nobody has before - cuz this game belongs in the final frontier of suckage. Live long and prosper in any other game than this crapfest.

Damn, I had such high hopes.

What the hell is wrong with the gaming industry nowadays? They see what time and development can return in terms of MMOs (warcraft), why are they always such in a rush to release mediocre games that end up crashing and burning within 6 months?

Warcraft has what? 11+ million customers now all ripping out 15 bucks a month? Which churns out to be close to 165 million dollars a month? This is just sad.

Oddly enough, Alric (from BT) likes it (other than the graphics quality). We'll see, I'm still going to try it. Can't be any more disappointing that WAR was.

The reason War seems better (which hurts me to even type such a ludicrous statement), is because you are not forced to take part in Public Quests etc. In certain parts of STO, you have no choice. You cannot progress certain epic Admiral quests unless you mount the offensive to take part in these missions, and that is too much like old school ML raids. PVP is the most important end game to me as I’ve never been a fan of pve’ing non stop etc (like WoW). I liked the 2 ranking system for CR and EXP that War had, but with STO it’s just… blah. Theres no real established PVP rewards other than to progress in the storyline, or to unlock the Klingon race. BTW – in case you did not understand that, you NEED to play as the Federation and take part and complete a quest to unlock the Klingons as playable chars, then reroll as a Klingon and start over etc… (this MAY change)… regardless… crap.

The pvp starship battles are pretty bad. You manually fly your ship less you wanna do the basic ‘keep at distance EvE interface lock’ and during combat you get an ‘evasive manuever’ option and once you do that –good luck regaining control of your ship. You cannot stop a warp so often you just keep ‘auto kiting’ and taking it from behind as your shields drop and you cannot do anything but watch. So evasive maneuver is good when out running a slower ship, but if your against someone with equal or faster ship speed, your just gonna auto move with them auto firing and /stuck to you lol. You won’t be able to defend yourself or fire back.

Land pvp is like Halo without the graphics. Each char gets a private shield, and once that is gone your ‘hull’ gets damaged. Once that is drop you are dead; however, like Halo / Mass Effect– you can fight and just hide out of combat for your shields to replenish etc. You get to equip 2 weapons so its best to go sniper / and some variance of phaser, but you can get a pbae weapon if you wish (tho they are weak). The controls here are more easier to do, but again, it’s the same kind of battles over and over.. kinda like Sim Ant. There is no real strategy in land pvp other than click and shoot. No other options really worth talking about. Star ship pvp is where the “fun is at” (if you want to call it that).

If it comes to space flight pvp, well.. just go to EVE. The games decently fun but requires a lot of thinking with stock markets, trades, and politics etc. If you want shooter pvp – just wait for Planetside 2. But this game does not do justice for either one… if someone likes it, they must not have done enough to learn not to like it.

Oh btw… the Klingon map has hardly any quests and is mostly pvp related. The klingons are going to be the ‘zerg’ realm due to the fact that their ships are worse and only good in sheer numbers and as ambushers. Since they don’t have the quests the Federation does, they have to focus on pvp and cannot do much 1 – vs- 1 etc. So expect them to be like Albs here.

Election day wasn't disappointing to me. flag But yeah the more I hear about this game, the less interested I am in trying it. Oh well. I guess it's another year of casual DAOC until TOR comes out next spring.

This is basically what I'm hearing from my coworkers. They said it's far far too buggy to be in the beta stage it's in right now, there isn't enough Star Trek customization on ships/players to hold the Trekkies in and there isn't enough new/fun/non-repetitive MMO stuff to hold the MMO'ers in so it's destined to fail.

I also heard a rumor that Cryptic had to make this entire game in < 2 years or they weren't going to see a return from their contract, which explains why it's being rushed so quickly out the door.

Personally I haven't enjoyed any of the Cryptic MMO's thus far so I did not have high hopes for this one.

Whoever sets these 2-3 year schedules to finish an MMO is a retard. Albeit a rich retard having the millions it takes to make one but still out of touch with reality. Maybe they just care about box sales and do the minimum needed to not be sued.

to quote a friend of mine from another board regarding STO:

I have a beta account. I have had it for some time. I have played it for a total of 2 hours and haven't really felt the need to login EVER again.

I like Star Trek (a lot), same with Star Wars. While I don't dress up or anything, I did name my daughter after a ST TNG character. That being said, I can't play the Star Wars MMO games (though Bioware's new one looks impressive), and I don't think I can play Star Trek Online, because I am such a fan of the series(es) (yes, including Voyager... even BEFORE Seven of Mine.. err, Nine.) I'm practically guaranteed to be disappointed with what they do in the game. From thrashing the lore (no, not Data's "brother" [nerd-snort]) to well, just about everything else.

Rags strange little tidbit, Marina Sirtis is my distant in-law. Her mom and my grandad's sister's husband were first cousins. So basically my grandad's bother in law and her mom first cousins I guess. Her mom dragged her and her husband to nyc to meet all the relatives one holiday season. I didn't go but everyone else said she was real nice.

Edit: Hey maybe I can call my uncle and see if he has a lot of back and forth still with her mom and get her to autograph a picture signed to Deanna you can give to your daughter. That would be cool happy

They should make a game about The Moon is a Harsh Mistress. I want to throw rocks at the Earth.

I think the "shine" has come off of the MMO apple for most old-schoolers. It would take an AmAzInG game to lure me back to MMO's.

Diablo III is the only PC game I'm waiting for.

I think that game may be that...

A friend of mine is getting me in this Sunday.

But from what he said and others... it looks really fun and the monthly subscription program is great sounding.
