Any tips on keeping your kids off Facebook who are on constantly?

My daughter especially, is on it non-stop. It's a daily event like checking email, but it's more because she chats constantly, post and reads constantly, and ties up the family computer ALL NIGHT. It's driving me crazy.

Last week she finshed a 1 week term paper and had to be on the computer and I checked the log, and every day she was posting and constantly texting friends. She said it was to ask questions about the paper, but I could see she was posting on their sites and chatting way too much. Of course she waited until the last day to write her paper.

set a time limit?

you can be on from 8-9 but other family members would like to be on the computer also.

talk to her and get her input on the time she would like. likely less fight than an arbitrary time set by you.

then stick to your guns.

If you tell her to stop visiting Facebook and she doesn't comply, create a profile just for her (and each member of the family), password protect your admin profile and disallow Facebook on her profile. Take away her rights on the machine to change any settings.

You're the parent here, unplug the internet when she's on the PC if she doesnt listen!

Sit there with her if she needs to research.

EDIT: typing when sleepy not good

It's hard to limit her time, because she says she needs to finish homework. Her school gives a minimum of 3 hours a night homework, though she spends most of that typing up her work. When I see what she's up to she just flips back and forth between FAcebook and homework.

she has it minimized??

Like Lyli said, you are the parent, click it closed.

Tell her no facebook until her homework is finished?

Facebook and myspace are not allowed on the computers I have purchased in our home. Our son has it on his laptop he got for college, but he knows better than to pull it up on other computers.

Like others have said, you're going to just have to set rules.

Obviously it's near impossible to stop her from flipping back and forth, so if she really is doing homework, it should only be that, and have facebook turned off, even unable to access it would work.

Bet you 3 hours of homework turns into a hell of a lot less when half the time isn't spent on facebook.

If she refuses to stay off facebook, dont let her use the computer. At all. She wants to type up her stuff? Too bad. She should have been following the rules. If the school requires that things be typed, then the school can provide a computer for it. Otherwise, she can just deal with handwritten work.

But I'd bet they still need to do research and all that since nobody buys encyclopedias or goes to libraries anymore. (We had some ancient ones when I was a kid. Too bad they're gone, probably antique collectors items now.)

Disable their internet, enable it when you're there to monitor their activities closely, "to help with the homework process."

Whats wrong with the local library? If she's using the home computer incorrectly then she can go to the local library and do the research the old fashioned way. We did it.

But there's creepy people out there and you'd have to supervise and drive. Ick!

My closest library was always too far. I had to rely on the old encyclopedias or whatever I could do while at school.

Yes and if you have to sit and supervise her, she will surely finish her homework alot sooner. Then I'm sure she will get tired of going to the library to do her homework, and follow the rules at your home.

dunno, just a thought

as a parent, you have to go the extra mile to make their life hell so they know you mean what you say. i would supervise her homework even if it killed me...just to show her that i am not playing around. i would also get her user info. and change the password so that if she wants on, i have to log her on and decide on how much time she can be there.

My children are all still toddlers but already they're fascinated by the computers. Before we had any children though, my husband and I set up some rules.

No computers (laptops or desktops) in bedrooms.
Play time outside required.
Reasonable computer hours adhered to. (That includes us)
Computers are a privilege not a right. (You can lose your computer time!)

We want our children to be involved in other things, playing in the mud, using building blocks, learning to how to make things, being responsible and being aware of the fact there's more to life than technology.

And ya, if she's giving you the "I need the computer" line perhaps it's time to unplug and send her to the library. And then let her back on the ocmputer later with more reasonable hours set (use an egg timer) and as a the parent you HAVE to enforce those times. She's obviously not ready for self supervision. tongue

There are computers at the library, too.

Personally, I must admit that I'm a facebook addict. Online gaming application and facebook chat, these two are my regular activities with my FB account. The downfall of my addiction is I can't finish all of my activities within the day.

Pulling the plug, setting up user accounts etc is great if you want to keep your kids off facebook while at home but they will just start resenting the hell outta you and go off somewhere else to do it. At that point, good luck ever finding out who they are talking to.

You may want to sit down and try to spend some time with the kid and find out why they are posting, what they like, hobbies, friends, aspirations etc. Its not going to stop them from posting, but it may make them more inclined to talk to you about any problems they have rather than vent on facebook plus it will give you some insight into where they may be posting and what they may have up their sleeve.

Doing this might make them more interested in you and maybe make them want to spend some time with you rather then all of it on facebook.

Put up monitoring tools on her machine to evaluate the time spent on FB and share the results with her. You should also supervise the homework and provide helping hand when needed, which might reduce the time spent on the Internet at all.
