Perhaps some simple program to build a journal file from our existing Quest Timer databases?

Doubt it. Since the 'quest journal' is client-side and not updated in any way by AC, it would be a waste of time to dump stuff there.

Personally I'm not even sure what Turbine was thinking when they added it.

Not sure either, but they obviously did NOT think "hey, there is a decal plugin for quest timer tracking, let's have a look how that works" sad

I don't mind the client side tracking, but without the automatic trigger it's pretty useless.

It wouldn't be hard to add full quest writeups to the journal since its just a flat file.

Exactly, and it's a nice easy tab to see your timers.

originally, severin said that you would be able to edit the files outside of AC then it'd reflect the changes inside of AC. This does not work. I added a couple quests for my toon, then went out and edited the file, but it did not change anything inside the game. sad

Based I what I found, the game loads the file on log in, and write changes as you edit/add entries, and finally will do a final write upon log out. Since it does not monitor the txt files for changes, if you edit the file while you are logged in, when you log out it will simply overwrite those changes with whatever AC currently has in memory. You should be able to edit the file when AC is not loaded and then see those changes when you log in next.

Let me amend my previous post. After further testing, it appears that the journal is saved only upon closing out the journal tab (if you open your pack for example). If the journal tab is closed and you log out, then it does not write anything. With that said, changes made outside the game will not be reflected until you log off and back in.

Also interestingly if you enter malformed data ("<LOC?> apple") it will zero it out to the defaults. However if you enter null data ("<LOC?>") then it will result in a client crash when you open your quest journal tab.

And most interesting of all, it will handle "Clickable" text. If you add the following line to a entry outside of the game and log in, the text will show as a link (same as player names in chat) and you can click on the text in the quest panel.
<NOTE> <Tell:IIDString:110011:1.1N, 3.3E>1.1N, 3.3E<\Tell>

That string uses the GoArrow click code, so if you click on that location, your arrow would point on it, and if you ctrl click on it, then it will make it your route destination, just like if the text was in the chat window. I could see that be very useful for quest writeups to make it easy to generate a goarrow route.

That looked nice

But too bad AC strips the click code when it rewrites the journal
file to disk, it is kinda hopeless to play with happy

That editor looks nice. Maybe you can convince the devs to "fix" the stripping? The clickable coords would actually make the quest journal useful.

I hate to chip away a bit more at the Quest Journal .. But the notes are limited to just over 2000 characters of content, also. That limits copy/pasting anything into it. I attempted to add chat from the NPCs on the new quest .... and ran out of space.

I also see the striping of the code as a good security step, but the GoArrow part is a great added-value portion to the Quest Journal usefulness.
