I figure $100-150 is worth having a backup for pictures. Need some opinions on features. How important is image stabilization? Power via AAs or rechargeable proprietary batteries? (I have two of the batteries for Canon Sds sitting around.) Any other things to look for?

As much as I hate using AA's I'd probably go for one with at least that option because getting batteries may be easier than worrying about charging a special battery. Kinda depends on where you're going I suppose.

For my P&S I just bought a second battery for it and when both batteries were new it was plenty for a LOT of pics. I ran out of storage long before a battery. Now they're both worn out and hardly last at all, but that's how rechargables go. If I wanted I can use a couple AAs in it in a pinch.

I think I'm going to go with AAs and either a Canon A1000 or Nikon L19. I'm heading to Nepal and now that I think about it, having a backup for times when I can't get power would be just as useful as a backup if something breaks on the DSLR...

Looking around a bit more, I'm thinking of trying to find an Canon A590 in stock somewhere. Anyone know much about the camera? Seems like a good fit for what I want...

As long as you're willing to spend a little money, it doesn't matter much which one you get really. just make sure you're not dependant on a plug to recharge it (AA batteries)

Do AA batteries tend to last decently long? I don't mind buying a huge pack for a trip, but at a certain point it just becomes inconvenient. The 250-500ish shots Canon claims sound fine, but then some people complain about only getting 50 or so per charge. Do rechargeables tend to hold last longer or shorter than your normal throw away batteries?

Higher amount of milliamperes = lasts longer. That beeing said, you can get AA's everywhere in the world happy

The rechargables I got for my Kodak P&S were much better than AA batteries. But at $45 each I'd hope so. happy
