So my cousin's laptop has been crashing, quite frequently, except when booted up in safe mode. It has crashed prior to the xp login screen, and afterwards also. It gives the exact same memory address. Should I assume this is then a hardware error? I haven't had time to run memtest86 to check, but should I just reformat, see if that works then try hardware troubleshooting?

I'd try memtest before reformatting... its less effort/time wasted. It could be bad memory, a failing sector of the hard drive, or poorly installed/incompatible drivers effing up the real windows install (stuff that isn't loaded when safe mode is run).

Recently a Device was installed/updated on the laptop and the driver for this device is causing the bluescreen.

Safe Mode doesnt make it easy to Uninstall/rollback however.

I have to assume at some point while booting you hit F8 and tried the choice that says

"use last known good configuration".

Memory could be the issue also.

Not an easy one to troubleshoot tho

good luck!
