To all you folks out there who want to run Decal and at the same time are really bothered by the skybox bug, I have created a workaround. What this is is a patched version of Decal's inject.dll that forces AC to use software vertex processing in DirectX. While this 'solves' the skybox bug, it also will decrease framerates by a bit. It should also be noted that this workaround only works if you run AC with Decal. If you do not, check the big skybox bug thread for a non-Decal method of forcing software vertex processing (it was posted awhile back).

***** If you are not getting the skybox bug, DO NOT INSTALL THIS. All you will get is lower framerates. *****

The zip can be found on my site's plugins page.

To install, just extract the zip file to your Decal directory. "Decal Inject Gateway Service" will show up as version 2.9.6.1 instead of 2.9.6.0.

you'd best run and hide, otherwise wubbie will be stalking you till hell freezes over if you've fixed his cloud issue without a major hit to framerate/lag.

VI - I lubs you... now hold still while I get the rifle aimed happy
If you haven't already can I post this in the thread over on Turbine Boards?
How much is the drop in framerate?
Comparable to the drop from 3DAnalyze?
Thank you very very much for taking the time and effort to craft this, you have made many people happy.

agnari - its not my cloud issue, I don't have a bugged card happy
And Turbine will still screw up enough to keep me happily beating on Frelorn for a long time.

Wubbie - I tested this in all sorts of places, the most I ever saw as a difference was about 15, and did not notice any additional lag. Since I'm on dialup, I notice anything causing more lag immediately, so this was a nice plus (for me anyway!!). It works beautifully grin

was just joking with VI about it as the fix would turn you into a moon struck stalker.

not your bug? you sure pasted Turbine over it for a long time. Remember back when I use to slam you for your bias, You know turbine's bug, turbine not fixing it ect. I protested your not slamming the vid card/software driver side equally. Once you slammed both I stopped my ranting.

now the funny part it turns out it wasn't turbine but the card/driver side at fault (a total miracle of luck on my part).

anyway glad a fix is now available.

Your connection speed is irrelevant here, it's graphic lag not network lag that you'll get. Personally, I found it literally halves my framerate, and made the impact of having a decal window open too slow to tolerate, so I uninstalled it; I'd rather put up with the flicker than a fps of 4-5. I expect not every system would be affected that badly though, but for mine it's just not worth it.

Thorfinn_Sigurdssen - I'm sorry its not working very well for you, with luck there might finally be a real solution from Turbine/Nvidia on the horizon. But the good side is we have another option for the players.

Every solution we have so far has its own drawbacks.
- Buy a new card from Series 6/7 or an ATI
- Adjust camera view/text lines every time you login
- 3dAnalyze but no Decal/Vista.
- VI's new inject.dll - lowered framerate.

Everytime we move forward we get a little better, give us time at this rate some might just end up rewriting the engine grin

VI I just caught this on the Turbine Forums...

"Tezcatlipoca Re: If you own an Nvidia Series 8 Card...
i installed the fix and all i got was a little less of the skybox problem.
the card is a Nvidia gforce9500 GT, if that means anything... "

Seen a few people saying perfect wonderful, but this is the first report of something not being right.
Maybe we need to build a troubleshooting step-by-step and locate whats going on here...
I can ponder ideas but you have all the insight into what was done and why it works that way.

Any of the people reporting success using Series 9?
How about Series 8 and Series x reports please.

I'd like to try to narrow the parameters of where its failing, if this is indeed a fail on "our side" vs all Series 9 vs 1 series 9 card.

I need to go edit my post over there and pose some of the questions in my head that are coming thru now...
Hopefully I can get you more detailed information to look at, before you head over.

wubbie - WTF do they always gotta rain when we are having a parade!?

VI - first line of my questions was to please verify the right number was showing up.
I'll approach this like I approach all of this, get as much info as I can and see if I can find someone else reporting the same problem to support the "broken" claim.

Hopefully the user is just not good with following instructions and is willing to admit that grin

On an intresting side note, someone was posting about SLI and how Decal seems to drop it down to just 1 card. I thought that was werid, because if the SLI was balancing the game how can it not balance Decal.
But then I often am left in the middle of all of this going "Huh?" alot happy

Thanks again for the hard work and effort happy

That makes perfect sense, and is because of how the Decal view system currently draws itself. Perhaps in the future Decal's NVS will be finished and this will no longer be the case wink

Decal does disable one card in SLI, you only see half the screen in split frame mode.

AC and Decal also do not work when you force anti-aliasing on the client via the Nvidia Control Panel. The screen goes black. I guess I'm the only who likes to play the game with AA turned on. It makes the graphics a little more bearable. I wish they would incorporate it into the UI/client. I can't believe it's that hard to do. It seems like it would just be hooking into a DirectX function. Am I wrong?

And thanks Virindi for making a fix for the flicker. I've been suffering through it for two years.

Just to let you know, I did a reinstall of XP thanks to getting a couple of new hard drives.

When I had installed AC and Decal and I swapped the .dll file, when I would try to load AC it came up with a message saying that it couldn't find d3dx9_35.dll. Looking at an export from Decal, it only listed up to dsdx9_30.dll. Not sure of what to do next, I installed the next game, which was Fallout 3. Then I tried AC and Decal again and it worked.

Oops, seems you're right. Apparently I built it with a later D3DX version than the one Decal uses.

Oh well. I guess people should just consider the latest DX9 update a requirement for it grin

Sorry for the trouble.

I believe d3dx9_35 is august 2007... http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=cb7397f3-0949-487b-9247-8fee451bf952&displaylang=en for anyone else who doesn't have it.

Heh, actually I'm the opposite. There are newer versions of DX than the one I linked into the build, but they do not support Windows 2000, which I am running. So don't worry, I'm looking out for the interests of anyone else who happens to still be holding out on a new version of Windows and instead sticking with the best tongue

Well if 7 stays as predicted, I see a whole bunch of the whining stopping...
It seems in the business and ultimate tiers (lets take 1 product and quadruple the problems by splitting it up!) will have a fully functional Virtual Machine of XP out of the box, and not just a normal VM but one that you can use natively instead of emulation of stuff.

Mind you this is MS so I worry what we will actually get in the end...

When I first read about this, my heart jumped a little because I figured I would be able to forgo a dual boot XP/Win7 system. However, from what I have read, the XP VM will not support hardware acceleration. I hope I've read wrong.

After installing the extracted file in the Decal folder, I got the same error message regarding this application has failed to start because d3dx9_35.dll was not found. I installed the file from the link provided regarding d3dx9_35.dll and the same message came up when trying to log into AC. I noted that when installing the file it asks where do you want to extract the files to so I chose the Decal folder. That didn't work. I tried installing into the AC folder and that didn't work. I'm using an EVGA nvidia 512 MB 9800 GT. I'm going to try reinstalling Decal and see what that gets me. Reinstalling Decal got me back into AC and I'm not sure if I still have the sky bug...nope nope it's not gone but it is significantly reduced....YAY!!

Fyrie - i'd not heard anything about that yet. What I did learn tonight was the processor will need to support Hardware Virtulation mabob thingy... the problem is not all chips do it and the chip makers aren;t being very upfront about what chips do it, BUT there is an itty bitty program on Gibson Research called Secureable http://www.grc.com/securable.htm that will tell you if your chip supports it...

as always YMMV, and VI will make it better later...

Fyrie from what i've read in other threads and on T, is that there is often very little trouble in getting AC to run in/under a VM setup.

WHAT doesn't work/run is Decal, and for some that is the real show stopper.

I've done more digging today, and it seems like everyone is just speculating at this point based off the fact that it uses virtualPC under the hood which apparently does not support full 3D acceleration. With virtual pc, the video card is virtualized as a lowest common denominator / legacy card.

That being said, Transgaming has come up with a way to simulate 3D acceleration on the CPU, so maybe this would be a viable route if people can't get the game running natively under Win 7 and have the hardware to run XP mode.

But again, this is all speculation. Microsoft hasn't said anything one way or the other regarding hardware acceleration as far as I can find. Perhaps they are updating the technology to allow this. Only time will tell.

I was reading somewhere that once the MSDN servers recover from their second blowup there is going to be a timed bombed trial of 7 available. So I doubt we will have to rely on what people say might or might not be... we will find some guinea pigs to run it for us happy

My x2 is to old to support the Hardware Virtualization so I'm out...

Heya VI, gots a question...

Someone who was using the fix reported that it stopped working.
A little digging and the Inject thingy had reverted to the old version.

I dunno if its something the player did, or if patching has it check the dlls and then replaces "wrong" ones.

Is this just random happening, or just something we need to remind people who use your workaround to replace it after updates. You understand Decal much better than I so I defer to your awesome skills!

Upgraded to the EVGA GTX 260, and I just resubscribed today and noticed the sky flickering...good job on this workaround VI, it works for me, I can tolerate the slower framerate much more than I can the flickering. happy

If I have this bug could it be the reason why I dont get a decal bar ig? Geforce 8600 GTS btw and I tried everything under the sun to get vista/decal to work.
