Subject: I'm determined to get Decal to work with Windows 7 (beta)
Call me crazy, and I know that it's not 'officially' supported because my OS is a beta, but I *really* need this to work.

1. I tried to install Vista: My computer locked during setup.
2. I tried to install Windows XP: My computer blue screened.
3. I installed Windows 7 Beta...it worked perfect!

4. I installed Asherson's Call. Worked out of the box.
5. I installed Decal (the latest Alpha version) I was able to update it just fine, got all but one check mark (the one that's supposed to be a red X), I go to launch AC, and no Decal bar. I disabled the plug in's I've installed (goArrow, findIt, MakeIt, Decal Hotkey System), still doesn't work.

I've selected windows XP compatibility mode, and run as Administrator for both AC and Decal. Still no go.

Anything else?

If I could run Windows XP I would, but, since my laptop is giving me fits about any other OS (and beta 7 seems to work okay with everything else). ... anyway....

Please help!

Thanks! happy

Subject: I'm determined to get Decal to work with Windows 7 (beta)
i've said it before and was told by V-I that it isn't true, but i still disagree.

decal NEEDS .net 1 or 1.1 installed.

I recently had XP hosed up on one computer so bad that the easiest solution was re-install XP.

once that was done and working again, i attempted re-installing Decal. It wouldn't even load/install till after .Net 1 was installed (using the official decal install package).

thus i agure that it is NEEDED and i notice you don't have it. Having .net 2 and/or 3, won't help as apps are built around a particular .Net version which is then required. Thus depending on how old or lack of updates you have one could have .Net 1, 2 and 3 installed and being used.

As long as .Net 1 or 1.1 installs properly/successful, having it on your computer shouldn't cause any problems other then reducing avail harddrive storage space.

Decal does NOT needs .NET 1.1. If anything it would need 2.0.

One thing: don't run Decal in compat mode, run it normal and try it with and without elevation. It's probably a compat issue with AC and not Decal since we ran into a similar issue on Vista.

I'd attempt to figure it out, but I don't have a machine on which to install Win7

para i beleive you as you know far more about it then i ever will, BUT

why when i was it(decal packaged installation) loading/installing would it quit and complain that .Net 1 wasn't installed?

After i installed .Net 1 and 1.1 update decal would install.

REMEMBER decal really is that old that it was built during .Net 1's time. we asked questions about need to upgrade to .Net 2 when it was released AFTER decal. That was when one of the developers explained how apps are built around a version/install of .Net and if it needs .Net 1 and .Net 2 was installed it wouldn't work. They also explained that if .Net 1 was needed and .Net 2 was installed it wouldnt interfer with Decal's running.

You are probably thinking of ACDC, which runs on .net 1.1.

Decal is built with VS2005, which is .NET 2.0.

The Managed DirectX package is 1.1, so it MIGHT want the previous version installed, but isn't required, since most 1.1 code runs fine on 2.0.

Ultimately, anything using adapter, or if adapter is running, runs using the 2.0 framework.

What i did

Install ac ,decal , acdc in c:\ac\ , ie c:\ac\decal , c:\ac\Asheron's Call\ & c:\ac\acdc\

Run em all elevated for them to be able to patch and hook as they should.

AC and decal wouldnt run before i installed ACDC , seems to helped to get the hooking working

Okay, thanks for the input all!

I tried to install the .NET 1.1 framework. That didn't fix the problem.

Then I tried installing ACDC...why not, right? It doesn't run. something about Access Denied, and I think it screwed up my .ini file for AC, because I wasn't able to get into the game after that. I deleted the .ini file and now can get back into the game, but with no Decal.

Any other ideas?

Thanks!

I really hope this isn't taken the wrong way, but perhaps you are not the right person to be beta-testing OS software?

No offense taken. I got the beta from a friend, thought I'd try it out. It's a shame though that I can't get another OS to install on my laptop LOL

Anyway, after thinking about it, perhaps, I need to just run ACDC as Admin....

Anyway, I'm still open for additional ideas happy

Thanks all! I got it working. All I needed to do, was enable ACDC to run as administrator, it then ran the setup, and configured itself to work properly. Upon logging in, Decal came up. I exited, and re-enabled all my plug ins, they too came up with no problem!

So, it looks like for Windows 7 Beta... you MUST have Asheron's Call Dual Client (ACDC) installed and running.

Thank you all!

I could of told you that if I got her a few days earlier I went through all this a couple weeks ago. EXACT problem with installing OS's too, vista locks up and XP blue screens, if you get a copy of XP Pro with Service Pack 3 built in it will install, it's a driver issue. Vista with a service pack integrated works too, but if you can't get that you can install XP Pro with SP3 and then put your vista disc in and do an OS update to get Vista ;d And then put windows 7 on a seperate hard drive as I did ;d But just my 2 cents worth ;p
