Subject: Hey artists! Do you use a pen tablet?

I'm considering putting one as my Christmas item this year, just looking for feedback on how useful they really are.

No way I'll end up with a Wacom but I was looking at these two:

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16823102012

Or this more basic and much more affordable one:

http://www.newegg.ca/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16883101103

The reviews on newegg haven't really helped. Kinda torn between getting a cheap intro type to see if I'll actually use it and then if I do I'll find a way to get a good one, and if I don't it's not a lot of wasted money. OR .. get a midrange one and hope it's good for me and not have to consider an upgrade.

I'd be lost without mine.

The Wacom Bamboo is what I use, it's affordable and does everything I need it too, I don't know anything about any other type, I'm a Wacom whore wink

I do not. I've thought about getting one, though I really have no drawing ability so it might be a waste of $.

For some reason Newegg doesn't carry Wacom in Canada. I'll check other sites.

The Bamboo is kinda small, would you like a larger surface?

Shal we should definitely talk more about this, I've really been thinking about getting one. Trying to do some of this stuff with my mouse is making me insane

As long as you talk here! tongue

Found the Bamboo for $106 CDN, that's doable. (Especially since it's not my money tongue )

I might have to ask for one of these for Christmas...definitely couldn't hurt to have it at my disposal should I need it.

I've never used one. I don't have any drawing skills whatsoever so it never occurred to me to get one. tongue

I have this one http://www.wacom.com/intuos/9x12.cfm

It's very nice, but I haven't been able to sit down and draw much with it. I plan to once my office stops giving me work to do >.<

I wish... I generally can't stand substandard quality, so it would have to be a wacom tablet. They're too expensive for my occasional hobbying. So, more mouse drawing for me.

Just for the size comment, yes, it's small. That's actually one of it's selling points for me. grin

The tablet is about the size of a mouse mat, so doesn't take up a huge amount of desk space, you could even put a mouse mat on top for when it's not in use. The working area is just under 4"x6" and is perfect for a hobbyist. I occasionally use it for sketching, but I prefer a pencil and paper for that, but when I'm working on icons/banners/wallpaper/etc and need to draw a bit in, rub something out or when I'm colouring a black and white image, it's MUCH easier than using a mouse and the size has never been an issue for me. It's great for vector work in Illustrator, I just sketch in the shape I want with the tablet and then fine tune it with my mouse.

It couldn't replace a mouse for me, but in conjunction with one for specific tasks, it's perfect.

If you're a serious graphic artist then obviously something bigger would be needed, but for me, the bamboo is great in every way, especially price grin

(do you think I should ask for a commission wink )

I have a blue Wacom Bamboo Fun - medium size.

http://www.wacom.com/bambootablet/bamboofun.cfm

I don't draw, but I love this thing for cutting out & touching up images. It's a nice size...fits right beside my keyboard on my keyboard tray. Any larger and it would be too cumbersome for me to use.

I got this for just messing around:
http://www.woot.com/Blog/ViewEntry.aspx?Id=6134

It works for what I do. I do not draw much stuff on my own so there's no reason to spend a bunch of money on one.

It makes a kind of scratchy noise when I draw, but otherwise it works for me. It doesn't have an eraser end (I think some of the Wacom tablets have it built in) but it works well enough.

If you do not do a lot of drawing on your own I wouldn't bother with one.
