Subject: Vista 64 Decal Installation - Please Help
IM looking for help getting decal working on vista 64. Is there a decal installation that doesnt require direct X install? I think thats the issue im having.

Ive looked for threads for a guide. Ive tried the standard run as administrator and its not working. Can someone help me out or post an install guide link?

Thanks

3 Suggestions

1. Turn off user Security for your system
2. Run AC and Decal in Windows XPSP2 Compatibility Mode
3. Antivirus.. Use ONLY AVG Free edition.. ALL OTHER AV'S SEEM NO TO WORK... PERIOD. Something to do with Port blocking.

Don't install under Program files. I made a folder under my C drive called games and installed AC, Decal, etc., into sub-folders under this folder.

Only issue I have right now is getting DirectX 9 to work under Vista 64. happy

1) I would NOT recommend turning off UAC. It is there for a reason. Most people NEED this on as it protects them from shooting themselves in the foot. While I know it is a pain for some people, many people are "computer stupid" and end up with a compromised machine because they turn off UAC.

2) Decal does NOT need to be run in compatibility mode. It is actually recommended you do NOT run in Compatibility Mode. Simply install them to a different folder, and make sure you run it as Administrator when you need to do Updates and such.

3) AVG in my opinion is a piece of crap. Most of the others aren't any better on Vista 64. I've actually had MORE problems however with Port-Blocking in AVG than any other "anti-virus" solution. Unfortunately, I do not have a good suggestion for a Vista 64 Anti-virus application. The one I use (NOD32) I don't think has a Vista 64 version yet. Been a while since I checked though.

I'm sure there are other knowledgeable users around like Maddy who might have better suggestions for Anti-virus.

AVG is definitely a piece of crap. Unfortunately, that and Microsoft's AVS (not free) are the only known systems that work with AC and Vista. Kind of lame.

You could look at these for anti-virus:

Avast: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Avira: http://www.free-av.com/

Main issue with AVG of recent is bloat.

I got AC and Decal running in Vista64 with UAC turned on and not having to run anything (so far) in compatibility mode. How I installed everything:

1. Created a folder called Games on my C drive
2. Installed AC into this folder using the download from the Turbine site
3. Installed Decal into this folder.
4. Installed Castaway into this folder

No issues so far. Installing applications that create/modify files under Program Files is just asking for trouble.

I also have been running AC and Decal now for 18 months since Vista came out.

A couple of minor notes.

(1) Avast, which has worked wondeful for me, just downloaded a update today .. and the dreaded 0x80041008 returned. I fanally had to uninstall it to get AC to work. (Still working on this)

(2) On my Vista64, I have a "Program Files" and a "Program Files (x86)" folders. My "Turbine" and Decal folders are all under the "(x86)" folder and run with no problems.
