silly I have two I think.

No one taught me how to cook, at 16 I was a mommy and a wife, so we ate alot of cereal and ramen noodles lol. BUT! One night I decided to be super brave and attempt fried chicken. I remembered we did it in home ec lol, I thought i could swing it!

Yeah....I made the breading ok, but i cooked every piece completely through...there was no meat left...it was all burnt...LOL! My husband (at the time) really wanted to eat it, he tried, it just wasnt happening. That was my first attempt at fried chicken.

The second one was just this past Thanksgiving. I was all happy to be making a little dinner at his mom's house (that's where we were living at the time). I had the turkey breast in the oven, and everything was just about done, I was making the mashed potatoes (you know they were the REAL ones). Anyway, butter's in, and i've got the mixer ready... I go to put in the milk..and it was CHOCOLATE!!!!! We'd taken a half gallon of milk and made our own chocolate milk for the kids, I didnt even think about it, I just grabbed the jug and poured. I'll never live that one down I dont think. LOL

My first 'oops' involved learning the difference between a clove of garlic and a bulb of garlic. Personally, I thought it was good.

I haven't had a disaster yet, but I recall my father making a pizza once. He grabbed the wrong can and accidentally used tomato paste in stead of pizza sauce.

I've never really screwed up anything I've cooked, so I would have to go with the time I used a big skillet to sear the outside of a pork tenderloin and then put the meat and pan in the oven to finish cooking. I had company over, so I was a bit distracted, and when I went to take the meat out of the oven, I grabbed the stainless steel handle with my bare hand and dropped the whole thing on the oven door. Luckily, the meat stayed in the pan and was edible.

My hand, however, hurt like a bitch. I immediately put it in a bowl of water with just a little ice (we don't have "cold" water in FL) and soaked it for the better part of two hours and in the end I had no pain and no blistering. In fact, I went bowling that night. It was my right hand, too, and I'm right handed, but it didn't give me any trouble.

When I was about 9 I decided to make cookies by myself while my mom was at work. I forgot to put flour in the dough. I thought they seemed a bit runny when I put them on the cookie sheet, but went ahead anyway. We ended up with a burnt carmelized mess on the cookie sheet and the bottom of the oven.

I had made some dessert type dish that had a brown sugar crumbly mixture on top....

after about 20-30 minutes in the oven I wanted to see if the crumbly mixture was melting properly.....

so as I do with most food to see if they are warm, I put my finger down on top of it to feel it....

OUCH cry

Well, I've committed many kitchen "oops" in my time, including many things set afire (including myself!), broken dishes, wrong ingredient substitutions and so on, but this one takes the cake:

It was our turn to host Passover Seder at our house. Though I'm a Gentile and inexperienced as hosting large gatherings, I figured if I was well-organized, it would turn out ok.

So I set out to do a fair lot of the cooking the day before. Worked all afternoon and evening making Passover rolls, stuffing, matzo balls, and whatever else could be made or prepped in advance, and finally, at 11pm, started the soup. Figured I'd stay up a couple hours and then take it off.

Woke suddenly in my chair at 5am to a TERRIBLE smell. Went and checked and...the whole soup was gone except for a black mess at the bottom of the pot. shock doh! cry

So, at 5am, I dumped out the contents of the pot (thank God for Teflon!), cleaned it, and started the soup over. tired It turned out fine this time and I still had time to cool it, skim off the fat, and reheat it before dinner, which was a decent success. But I still can't believe I boiled away an entire soup!

My (ex)husband and I had invited 4 other couples to diner. I cooked a huge pot of beef stew. I had homemade biscuits. I cooked enough biscuits for my strawberry shortcake, which was dessert. I set the can of whipped cream out. Everything else was on the table ready to serve. Everyone was at the table and I was dishing up the stew for everyone.....and we hear about 5 seconds of *hssssssssssssssssssssss* follower by BOOM.

The can of whipped cream exploded. The top landed right in the pot of stew, splattering it everywhere. There was whipped cream and stew all over my walls, ceiling, table....and our guests.

After everyone and everything was cleaned up, we ordered pizza.

Oh, that does remind me about making bananas foster where you light the rum. That's really to be done on a stove with a *high* hood over it. I didn't catch anything on fire. But the heat softened the plastic cover over the light bulb enough that it fell into my dish.

When I was probably 10 years old, my Mom found a recipe for pumpkin bars in a magazine and thought it would be fun to make them together. We started making them, then she got distracted and left me to finish up. Well, the flour container was empty, so I just used the smaller container that had (what I thought was) more flour in it. Fast forward about 40 minutes and the bars are not setting up in the oven, they are super runny and I don't know why. Mom asked if I put in the flour and I said yes, and pointed to the container. Yeah.. it was powdered sugar. plain

Recently, I bought some silicone bakeware. I made a batch of muffins using the muffin pan. Timer beeps, I go to pull the pan out of the oven thinking "oh it's rubber, it shouldn't be that hot." FYI.. silicone gets damn hot. My husband laughed at me for being so dumb. Yet a couple weeks later, he made a pan of cinnamon rolls and did the same exact thing! laugh

At the tender age of 21, made my first turkey for my first husband and family and left the giblets in. I guess that's pretty common with new cooks, though.

A couple of years ago, I made deviled eggs for my husband and instead of grabbing the paprika to sprinkle on top, I grabbed the chili powder. He actually liked them tongue

Every once in awhile I end up scrapping a batch of pie crust because for some reason I forget to add the salt. It's some kind of a mental block...

Well, I wanted to make this bbq sauce that starts with you boiling down a liter of coca-cola.

So I set my timer to 10 minutes, forgot to turn it on rolling_eyes , and played EQ2.

Fortunately I didn't set off the fire alarms. Took the mess outside and let it cool off
on the porch.

I'm a fan of Biker Billy's deviled eggs:

We usually omit the scallion. And instead of the chipotle in adobo, I like powdered guajillo. But personally I think the cumin adds a nice, different twist.

I have been thinking really hard on this one. I am lucky I had my mom and my mom in law who helped me out a lot when I was younger cooking. But I remember one oops that if Grandpa Fran was still alive he wouldn't let me live down.

It was the fourth of July family picnic. I was to make German Potato salad like my mom in law taught me.. she was counting on me to do it. No problem I had made it several times before from her recipe. German potato salad to her is warm and vinegary. The salad part I did just fine but to heat it up and take it to the picnic I had to be inventive. I put it in a wooden bowl over night and thought that fits perfectly in microwave, wont break if dropped, looks good on table. lol She was so mad at me after we tried it. The vinegar soaked up the wood and the entire bowl of salad tasted like wooden bowl. It had no other real flavor. Grandpa Fran was just rolling laughing. He really didnt like the stuff so it was great for him he didnt have to eat it.

In transition to a new base in Iceland, I hadn't been in my own kitchen for over a month and I really missed cooking.

We'd only been in our new base housing apartment for 2 days when I decided to make sticky rolls. It was about 11 pm when I finally put them in the oven, set the timer and went to unpack boxes in the bedroom. The topping boiled over and started burning on the bottom of the oven, filling the place with smoke.

Then the fire alarm went off, evacuating the whole building... kids and neighbors outside in pajamas.. and then the firetrucks showed up, sirens blaring and lights flashing, waking up people in the nearby buildings who came outside to see what was going on. I wanted to find a nice rock to crawl under sad

I ended up baking more rolls for the other people in the building, and delivering them with an apology.
