Subject: Are ornamental pears edible?
We have a tree in our back yard that appears to be an ornamental pear. This year it is covered with little pears that are about 2 inches tall. Are these ok to eat? We need to pick them so we don't end up with a mess but I was wondering if I could do something with them rather than just toss them out.

From what I've read ornamental pear trees don't bear fruit. So, I'm unsure if what you have is edible, but I bet someone else might know. You might have to boil it down to what type of pear tree it might be before you know what you can do with them.

Take a small branch with a couple leaves and one of the pears to a local nursery. They'll be able to tell you what kind of tree it is and if the fruit is edible.

Good idea.

After looking at images on the web, it may not be an ornamental pear. The fruit in the pics I've seen looks more like the tree in our front yard. The one in the back might be something else.
