Synergy lets you easily share a single mouse and keyboard between multiple computers with different operating systems without special hardware. It's intended for users with multiple computers on their desk since each system uses its own display.

I've been using this software for years. It REALLY comes in handy with my laptop(s).

To play games, it lets you hit a "special" key to cross the barrier so it doesn't keep moving the mouse back and forth between the computers. Works for Macs too =P

Yep, and Linux/BSD. Been using Synergy for awhile now myself, it's pretty nice.

Did I read it wrong, or do you require a separate monitor for each box?

That's right. I use it mainly for my laptop. I'll use my desktop as the "server" that shares it's key/mouse so I can move my mouse to the laptop screen.

So, how is this an "alternative to a KVM switch"? If it requires a monitor, there's not a whole lot of benefit in it, other than not having to move your chair over 2 ft to use another keyboard and mouse.

I think what he means is.. it's good for dual-boxing

also allows you to view and control 2 characters almost simultaneously without alt-tabbing or dual logging directly ... for those of you who like to live on the edge.

This is an alternative to a KVM. If your perceived needs are meet then use it.

For me:
I consider using same Keyboard and mouse a good thing.
-Using different keyboard layouts is a pain and so confuses my fingers.

I consider seeing what each box is doing at all times is important.

I consider having monitors side by side and touching is good thing.
-Having screens in your field of view so improves your responsiveness.

I consider not having to move 2 feet is a good thing.
-moving is slower then touching a key.
-moving implies that you have boxes separated enough that field of view is degraded.

Note you can achieve this also by using KVM and just not use the video switch part.

But, if it requires you to use a seperate monitor for each pc, isn't it a good alternative for a KM switch, as the V in KVM is Video?
