Today's victim is Shazami. He lives out west (WA state?) and is in college, I believe. He's also our resident deaf guy here on ACF. I remember someone asked him the other day if he had to write notes for waitresses and I actually thought it was great that this community is one where someone *could* ask him that without any offense being taken and he could take the opportunity to educate us poor saps.

So, Shazami....tell us more about yourself!!

Let's see here... Where to start...

I was born on July 23, 1981 in Long Beach, California. A week later, my family moved all the way to Mount Vernon, WA. 8 months later, I came down with something called Spinal Meningitis, from what I understand, I spent about a month at a hospital recovering. While I had the meningitis, I also got a high fever / temperature that basically melted the hair in my cochlea. Because of that, I was left Deaf. For those who needs an anatomy lesson, the hair in your cochlea is what carries the sound from your ear to your brain.

When my parents found out I would be Deaf for the rest of my life, they started crying. They contacted my uncle, who is now a retired teacher for the Deaf and asked him for advice. He told them, "Don't treat him special, pamper him, shelter him, or whatever... Allow him to experience the world for himself." That's what my parents have done ever since. Because other parents would just freak out and say "Fix his hearing, no matter what it costs..." I'm grateful that my parents did not do anything and was like "Okay, we can work with this..." That's what they have done for me my whole life. They have not tried to shelter me from experiencing the world for myself. I do not see my being Deaf as a disability, I see it as a challenge for me to rise up to and overcome it.

Approx Christmas 1985 (or 1986), my parents divorced. As I understand the story, my father got off work one day and didn't come home. My mother waited a couple hours and decided to send my grandpa after him to see what's going on. Remember, back then, there wasn't cell phones. My grandpa drove to Anacortes (cuz dad works there), and drove among the residences til he found dad's car in front of a house. He walked to the door and knocked on it. The young boy who lives there answered it and my grandpa asked him where is my father. The boy said, "Upstairs with my mom." So he went upstairs and saw that he was in bed with the lady. He was like, "Oh... Okay..." then told my father, "Do not come home at all." Then he went back to inform my mother, and my mother was like, "Hmmm... Guess it's time..." So next day, she filed divorce papers. My mother raped my father for pretty much everything he had, the house, land, car, and so on...

After the divorce, I visited my dad on weekends, and some of the summers... 2 or 3 years later, he disappeared without saying anything... I didn't even hear from him til 3 years ago where he sent me a letter talking about what he been doing & etc... I only read it and was like, "*laughs*" then shredded it without a thought.

Let's see, where now... Ah, elementary... I went to public school with 4 other Deaf kids. As coincidence would have it, they were in the same grade as myself. We had an intepreter. At the end of 3rd grade, my grandpa, my mother, and I went down to the State School for the Deaf and I guess my mother decided that it would be the best place to send me so I went there.

Fall of '89, I started going to the State School for the Deaf in 4th grade... I pretty much coasted my way through... A waste of 9 years... I coasted my way because the material they taught at the school was stuff I had already learned from when I was at public school. I didn't really care about classes & etc... I did good enough to graduate and move on, this was spring of '99.

Fall of '99, I began school at Gallaudet University, and for those who wonders... Gallaudet is a University for the Deaf (pretty much) and offers BA, MBA, and PhD degrees... http://www.gallaudet.edu for those who cares... I spent 2 years going here because I needed to get away from my mother and it was a perfect escape so I could have some time to figure out what it was I wanted to do. At the end of the 2nd year, I just dropped out and didn't return home or let mom know where I was at...

I moved down to South Carolina for a month, then moved up to Chicago for a year. After that, I went to Indiana, then to Spokane, WA. I loved Chicago and I hope to be able to return there someday. I decided to experience something that would be only a one-timer. Since I was moving from Indiana to Spokane, WA, I decided I'll ride the Greyhound to see what it's like to travel over a huge distance. Now I know I will not be doing that again because dammit, it was a long and a boring ride... I wanted to kill myself after 24 hours... It was a good experience... the bus went from Cincinnati to Madison, WI, to St. Paul, Fargo, Billings, then finally Spokane.

I moved here to Spokane because a friend of mine was looking for a roommate and asked me. I didn't even give it a minute's thought. I was like, "Sure! Be there in a few days..." And just packed up 2 suitcases and was on my way.

When I got here, I started looking for some type of employment. 2 years later, haven't found any work. So with the support of my mother, I returned to school here at Spokane Falls Community College chasing an Associate's degree. I didn't even bother to transfer any credits I collected at Gallaudet since I wanted to start on a clean slate. My advisor understood that and allowed me to do so. Now I had to decide on what major I wanted to study. I spent a year taking various classes... I thought about, at first, English, but was like, "eh, what would I be doing?" then started thinking about technical writing, archaelogist, linguistics, then started thinking about the business fields... Then it was here I decided, I'll do something in business... I thought about the many fields available from Accounting to Management to Operations, and so on... I narrowed it down to two fields... Human Resources and Operations.

I chose Human Resources as my first choice, Operations as my second, because I think it would be an interesting experience to be working in a human resources office and watch people come in and try to talk to me. Then I would say "Uh, I can't hear you... You'll have to write..." then watch their reaction on their faces and see how they figure out how to communicate with me.

And now, I had to decide where to go for my BA degree. I knew it would be somewhere here in the State of Washington. But where? So I chose 2 universities... Eastern Washington University in Cheney, WA... Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA. I did my applications & etc... and mailed them out October 13, 2006. Now how to pick if both gets back to me with an acceptance letter... I decided I would pick the first school that sends me an acceptance letter. 3 weeks later, I heard from Western Washington University and they had accepted me as a new incoming transfer student for Fall '07. I was like, "Oh crap..."

Because that meant I had to pack up everything I have and move from one side of the state to the other side... So I decided I will go to Western. I informed my mother, she was like, "Oh yes!! I'm glad you're coming home. Now we will all be together again..." I was like, "Ughhhhh" because I can see it... She'll e-mail me every damn day asking "Wanna go to dinner? Wanna go to Canada?" blah blah blah...

So um, let's see, what else... I'm in my last quarter at Spokane Falls Community College... I have taken 116 credits over the last 2 years and half and I think I have done pretty well for myself, I carried a 3.3 gpa... I'm only taking 6 credits this quarter since I pretty much finished everything else. I'm taking Math and Bowling. Math = Calculus, which is why I'm posting math help threads here often tongue lol ...

Come June 21st, I'll be packing up all my things in a moving truck and heading onto the road for Mount Vernon, WA. I will be returning home to the land / house where I grew up.

Oh yea, forgot to mention... I have a older brother who's quite several years older than me. I had a female dog named Max who was killed a few years ago waiting at the edge of the driveway by an idiot who wasn't paying attention. She was a damn good dog, she somehow knew I was Deaf because one night I was sleeping, she jumped on me because she needed to go outside.

Anyway... I know it's long but eh, lol... I'll respond to comments as time permits today since for unknown reasons my desktop has decided to take a huge crap on me. I think a part burned out or something... And tonight, I will be going drinking for a friend's 21st... So happy lol...

Interesting read. I'm curious though, how was Gallaudet? We were taught a lot about it, sounded like an awesome place. I'm curious why you dropped out from there though?

And do you still keep ties to the Deaf community? Do you go to any of their functions, etc.?

Gallaudet was an interesting place... Wasn't someplace I would go for a degree. I only took advantage of it because it was a place on the other side of the united states...

I don't really keep ties to the deaf community anymore... I prefer the Hearing community more happy I do'nt go to many functions...

Why on earth would you use 7pt type?

How often do you speak? Only when you need to or do you hold entire conversations?

Do you know if the medical technology exists to restore your hearing if you so choose? Not that there's anything wrong with being deaf, of course.

Why not use 7 pt? grin

I can speak, but I don't on purpose. Because I enjoy watching how people reaction when I tell them I can't speak or hear. I only speak when I need to such as ordering food in a restaurant... But I do not try to carry an entire conversation...

Yes, it's called a Cochlear Implant... Basically a piece of technology that can be inserted into your ear surgically. It's not something I would like to be. I don't want to be a borg. grin

SPOKOMPTON!!! WOOOOOO

I never knew you were deaf either (I guess it doesn't matter, thank God for the Internet). Had to spend some time with a deaf girl about my age a few years ago...just communicated mostly via a little notepad and a pen.

Is that how you primarily communicate with the hearing, or do most people you encounter know sign language?

Also - I still want you to harass Ferd while you're at WWU. I went to Central, so we'll be 'mortal enemies' or some crap like that tongue The CWU/WWU games are the best, because they sell a bunch of really vulgar shirts (at least they did on Central's campus) so you might be able to get some of those too at WWU grin

One more thing...there's a great pizza place you have to try when you get to Bellingham - it's called 'La Fiamma'.

Good luck with school!

Yes and No. I am fortunate to have the ability to lipread, it was not an easy skill to pick up. My entire life, I've always had hearing friends. But I do use sign language when I'm among Deaf people. Lip-reading is a nice skill to have because you can lipread people when they're behind closed doors and you're in the other room and if you're curious... grin

Are you completely deaf? How do you deal with sirens and such?

While my hearing doesn't work, my eyes do happy you know the sirens do have red / blue / white lights, right?? happy [/quote]

Yeah, but a lot of the time if you're at a light and one comes, you can't see the vehicle until its in the intersection, especially if it's going east/west and youre headed north/south. And apparently, even with the sound people don't recognize they need to stop tongue

Thanks for sharing.

Years ago, my mom's assistant at work was a deaf lady. She could lipread really well and even hold conversations, but it was difficult to understand her. My mom had no problem because she was around her every day, but I had a hard time the few times I met her. Do you find that people have a difficult time understanding you? If so, is it frustrating?

Deaf people just have to be more visually aware of their surroundings when they are driving.

I bet they see the ambulance coming before a lot of people hear/see it, seeing as how so many drivers are distracted on the road with screaming kids in the backseat, cell phone stuck to their head, loud music thumping out of their trunk, etc.

Well, hmmm 2001!! Wow, well you're in for some changes. LOTS of growth, more people, more houses, and lots of migrant and permanent farm workers (more racial violence associated with the hispanic community).

BUT now Mt Vernon/Burlington has a huge Costco with gas pumps, the factory outlet stores are run down, and I think there is a new Wal-Mart laugh It's been awhile since I drove up there.

More questions:

So does being deaf allow you to score more easily?
Does your older brother give you grief? (sibling rivalry style grief)

I bet being deaf would be a marriage saver!! Cuts down on nagging a lot.

Ok here's one I really hope doesn't offend you.

If you couldn't tell already, i'm somewhat active within the Deaf community (near-fluence in ASL as well), and one thing I didn't understand (probably because i was born hearing) is that they see being Deaf as a cultural thing rather than a disability.

My question is that in response to that, I understand it would be something in which to overcome and thus become empowered, but how (in your opinion) would that be a *cultural* thing? I would think that our (American (limited)) acceptance of things would be a protagonist in the formation of a subculture (sounds bad, but its true), which would have morphed it from a disability to a greater euphemism of "hurdle to empower one's self" to a then greater euphemism of "we are a culture".. but I still (not refuse) don't see it as a seperate culture as something regional/ethical. I was hoping that you would be able to shed light on that concept. Please don't take my ignorance of it as intolerance.

Sounds in dreams... good question... i never notice... but i would probably say yes... because I am fortunate to have the ability to lipread and talk... I'm self-taught, tho happy I never took speech therapy for how to speak.

Hummm... I don't hunt... I can, but just not something I want to do...

Syn:

Here's the Wiki article on deaf culture...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Deaf_culture

That explains things fairly well although it seems to focus more on the so-called 'core beliefs' and the overall positives and doesn't really talk about some of the more prevelant prejudices or any of the negatives within the community itself...

Being deaf is, in a way, a badge of honor according to the community and they enjoy the seperation. Much in the same way that other groups like blacks, christians, gays, etc all 'settle' within the confines of people of the same color, religion, whatever, so also do many deaf people.

I have a pretty drastic hearing 'disability' (not totally deaf) and my impression of the 'deaf culture' from my contact with it is predominately VERY negative... that's about as kind as I can be about it honestly...

Ahh... I do not think in sign... I think in words / English...

Thing is... I believe that I was raised different from other Deaf children. When i was young, i read alot of books from novels, comics, newspapers, and so on... That helped solidify my understanding of the English language. And I think that also helped me gain the ability to lipread / speak for myself.

Some Deaf people would not have the same understanding as I do. To me, that tends to mean that they were left behind and left to fend for themselves which happens often in public schools.

Interesting, so do you like see the words?

The way I describe thinking is I hear myself speak. But if you don't know what the sense of hearing is like I can't imagine you know what the words sound like. Then again if you can speak maybe you can.

I didn't ask if he missed it. I asked if he was curious about it.

And I'll add to that: Can you 'imagine' or 'hear' music in your head?

I do understand the basic concept of music... But more than that, naw... just not interested in it happy

Funny... When I was a wee boy, I believe, about 8 or 9 years old... I would always turn on my mother's stero and crank it up and put my right ear right next to the speaker and would be able to tell my mother or brother which instrument was being played... grin

I took a sign language course in college, it was a good time. I've known that your deaf, and was always intrested in that. The community college i went to had a mini gaudette school inside. It had a huge deaf population of students. It was amusing watching them hackey sac and talk about the girls who went by. Haha...

Acx reads lips because he's got some hearing problems but was raised with no special treatment.

Do you find it really hard to get girls because of this? Or have you been to busy to focus on girls.

Awesome read Shaz! You seem to cope with being deaf really well. Sometimes I wish I had been born completely deaf and communicated through sign language instead of my weak assed hearing.

What is your degree going to be in btw? Maybe you mentioned it but I didn't see it.

And you can be Deaf if you want... Just take off your hearing aids and take sign language courses at your local college... To become proficient in it, you gotta hang with alot of Deaf peeps then you'll be signing like you been signing your whole life... happy

lol ...

Myself, I can lipread... But I do have to guess sometimes because of some words such as ball, mall, and so on... there are some words that actually has the same mouth movement... So I have to lip-read the whole sentence then go "Ah, they meant this..." then respond back...

Quite a headache...

And Taschi - I do remember you just a little bit... It has been years since I logged into AC. So I've pretty much tossed out everything about AC... So happy
