Today's victim is -Abednego-. I know he lives in Virginia (Norfolk?), is married, and has a couple kids. He has a biochemistry education (IIRC) but works now as an architect. He's probably one of the more vocal Christians on the board, but he's also open-minded and I respect his opinions.

So.....tell us more, Benny!! Any hobbies (aside from gaming with your kids)? What kind of things do you design as an architect?

Previous Focus On victims include:

Rikostan
Caledric
Trunks-san_MT
MoFoEskimo
.Kid.
pkhere
Oedipus_Zarathustra
ghostparasyte
hart_thorin

Woot! Thanks for the Focus On, Lynea. I'll spare you my christian experiences.

My former board name was DrJekyll when I played AC. Once I moved to WoW I made a new handle as Abednego. I had to pick Abednego after watching a cartoon called Veggie Tales. If you’ve ever seen it, there is a cucumber named Larry who has the oddest voice you’ve ever heard. …. Unless you’ve heard me talk. Yeppers!! I sound just like that happy little freak Larry from Veggie Tales irl.

Born August 1975 in Fairfax Virginia. Lived in VA all my life.
My parents are (were) both GS-15 federal workers for the State Department. They are still together happily retired and out spending my inheritance. I have 1 brother, 2 years younger. The rest of my family lives in Paola and Neodesha Kansas. They are all farmers owning hundreds of acres of land. I love visiting them.

Family life for me has always been stable. Nothing notable to write about. All my biggest life lessons have come from watching other people screw up and reap the consequences of it. I’m a short guy. Practically a hobbit at 5’ 5” and 120lbs. I eat EVERYTHING and never gain weight. Yes, people hate me for it.
I was a C student in middle school. High school saw improvements as I got B’s and A’s. When I got to college I really woke up and started studying. I studied my brains out at a little undergraduate 4-year college called Ferrum. Ferrum is DEEP in the backwoods of SW Virginia. They are best known for their environmental science program – and since I am a tree-hugger, I took right to the school. Got all A’s and a handful of B’s and graduated with a degree in BioChemical Engineering in 1997.

I did post graduate work at George Washington University studying System Engineering and Architectures on Lockheed Martin’s nickel. Married a girlfriend from college in 1999 and we spent the next 3 years blissfully DINK.
While working for Lockheed Martin I worked in an office where most of us had an affinity for video games. One guy introduced the lot of us to Asheron’s Call. Wa-Laa! AC gets introduced to characters like me, Heart of Gold, and F-Jackie.

In 2002 my son shows up. I SUCK as a parent. Kids don’t come with instruction books so I really winged it with my first son. I’m amazed he’s normal.
In 2005 my daughter shows up. The second kid is way easier than the first.

That’s my life!!! Very uneventful (I don’t attract drama if I can help it).

These are pics of me that the wife made for Father’s day in 2006: 56K DIALUP KEEP OUT!!!

If you're still here, I'll share the few drama moments of my life:

Abe’s drama:
I categorized Drama into A) Adventure and B) Women.

My best Adventure drama came in college. Getting all A’s in the environmental sciences got me in good standing with the professors and faculty. They gave me a set of keys to the Labs and buildings so I could keep up my research. Well, Ferrum was built in 1905. 3 of the original buildings are still standing. One of them is the church. The church basement doubles as the campuses art studios. But I found out the basement isn’t really the basement.
In the back of the art department were some storage boxes. While doing Black-n-white photography my senior year I found a door behind those boxes snooping around for more photo paper. The door led to the real basement of the church and I’m guessing it hadn’t been opened in 20 years. I confirmed that when I saw a calendar hanging in the basement dated 1982. The basement had in it some of the original maps/surveys of the land around the campus and some books that were hella old. The maps were the most interesting as they showed the location of 2 old iron mines and 1 natural cave in the area and 3 graves on campus (buried under the theater). I went looking for them. I’ll share that story later….

My best B) Women category.
Immediately after college I lived in an apartment with a high school friend of mine who was also graduated. A 21 year old gal named Elizabeth who was pseudo-wiccan. I say pseudo because I don’t think she actual did Covens but loved the goth theme stuff. I think these days you’d call her straight up emo. But whatever, I celebrate diversity.
I had a brief fling with a chick who picked me up at a country-western bar one weekend. The fling lasted 3 weeks and DAMN was it a ride. We broke up when she got mad at me one day and began breaking stuff. She called me over the next 3 days no less than 300x. My friends took turns entertaining themselves answering the phone. I vowed never to date a psycho chick ever again. The psycho chic did try to stalk me for a bit. My biggest ally was Elizabeth who helped me fend her off by clinging all over me in public. peace

More adventure Drama:

After finding the old map of one of the natural caves near Ferrum, I showed it to a Senior "Outdoor Rec" major who I was *cough* dating at the time (don't tell my wife!). And yea, you could get a undergraduate degree in Outdoor Recreation. [face_party]

The cave was located along the Pig River just outside of Ferrum.

In the last 100 years I suppose the river had shifted a bit. The entrance to the cave was under the river now. Tami (the outdoor rec friend) found it. She had to dive to the bottom of the Pig River, swim under the rock, and surface inside the cave. It was my first big “fear factor” moment in my life. In total honesty, it was a 5 foot swim down, 5 feet under a rock wall, and then surface. Naturally there was a fear you’d get turned around or caught on something and just eff’ing drown. shock

Once inside we quickly saw that we were not the first ones to discover the cave … but we were the first in about 20 or so years ( I have no clue how long the mouth of the cave had been underwater).
The cave was NOTHING like the movie Descent. It was roomy enough to stand up in, but muddy as all get out. Tami ended up exploring most of it. I cave walls were caked with mud ceiling to floor. I kept getting paranoid of the mud walls collapsing and burying us. Tami assured me that the rock on the other side of the clay (not mud) was 2/3 the strength of steel and wouldn’t collapse.

The only thing we really found were lots of foot prints, hand prints, and “Bob was here! Class of 55!!” type stuff written in the muddy walls. Tami managed to locate a few gems such as geodes and some small crystal formations but didn’t remove them. She has a pretty high ethic in preserving caves and she promised she’d leave me in this cave if I tried to remove them. worried

Tami wrote a paper on the cave discovery that eventually landed her a spot at a graduate school out in Illinois in Recreation Management. I took several clay samples and water samples back for analysis. My paper wasn’t nearly as exciting as hers.

next adventure was to find the 3 graves....

DINK = Duel Income, No Kids

3/4 of my salary alone covered all the bills and utilities. My wife used her salary to cover all entertainment, travel, and vacation expenses.

Then when kids comes along you have to decide whether to put them in childcare that eats away at one salary and gives substandard care ... or if the wife just stays at home. Either way, you lose one income and gain a lot more bills.
The American way of life is not child friendly.

Adventure in the Iron Mines of Ferrum.

I’m sure all of you know this, but the word ferrum is latin for iron. Up until 1915 or so that area used to be an iron mine for the railroad companies. Hence, Ferrum got it’s name. The location of the mines had been an urban legend at the college. A lot of us figured the iron mine was a strip mine/query – but in either case, no one knew it’s exact location.

The records in the basement of the church dated 1905 showed the iron mine a few miles south of the college in between Ingramville Rd and what would be Prillaman Switch Rd.

We (Tami, Myself, and a girl from my analytical chemistry class named Dana) went looking for the mine.
The mine turned out to be an abandoned query that had one shaft going into a mountain side. In good college fashion, we started out on our adventure at 3 in the afternoon – followed the railroad tracks south parallel Prillaman Switch Rd and then turned into the woods when we got just east of the mine. Sunset wasn’t too far off when we finally got to the mine location.
It was overgrown. The query rocks were still evident. We could see segments of railroad track all over the place.
We had an hour, give or take, until sunset and we were excited to see as much as possible. So we stayed and looked around. Dana and I wanted iron samples for our chemistry projects. Tami was along as our wilderness tourguide.
The mine shaft itself looked wickedly unstable. In spite of that, the mine looked like it was still in use for something. There was a lot of evidence that someone knew it was here as there were tire track and a well beaten vehicle path out of the area. Unlike the cave – there was a total absence of any college party scene here. In the cave there were just a bunch of massive drums with tubing.

How many of you guessed Moonshine operation yet?

Yea that’s when the light bulb came on for us too.

Hiking around Ferrum college in the wilderness is a lot like entering the Forbidden Forest in Harry Potter novels. You just don’t do it without armored escort. Instead of monsters you run into Deliverance style hillbillies with gun skills protecting their moonshine or pot operations. And as exciting as it would be to find an old mine – we just chalked this one up to being “occupied”. So we beat feet out of there.
God save us, we never saw the owners of the moonshine operations.
But on our way back it was getting dark – in fact it was dark. We ran smack dab into some slack-jawed yockle teenagers in a pickup truck sitting out in a field near the tracks drinking beer. Hooray!!
We tried going around them … but I think we got too close. I heard a girl yell, “What the hell is that out there!”
“I saw a bear!”
“I’ve never shot a bear before… *click* “ mischief
Us = shock
The three of us said in total unison – RUN! And we hauled ass out of there. I never heard a shot fired, but we just about pissed ourselves by the time we got to the railroad tracks and back to the college.

The graves themselves are not interesting in terms of finding them.
The stories around it relate to really good excuses to have all night parties in the theater.

Here's the story:
The theater is building 2 of 3 that is an original from the first building of the college in 1905. The third building left standing is the President of the College's house.
The documents from 1905 had an incident report in it that showed 3 migrant workers were killed when the wall of the theater collapsed during construction. They were buried on the scene due to the fact that their bodies couldn't be shipped back home.

They were buried under the theater "under the southern wall."
Now what does this mean to a senior at college who has keys to ever facility on the campus? Nothing. Except one hell of an all-night ghost party. We didn't plan on a party. We wanted to do our own ghost hunting expidition. Was the theater haunted?
Our second objective was a typical horror movie orgy.

Fact: Thespians are sluts.

We (me, my roommate, and 2 other geeks) invited all the hot ones to our ghost hunting camp out in the theater. And by hot I mean the nerdy looking thespian chicks cause the really hot thespians majors were out boinking the football players.

So at 11pm we got inside and camped out on the stage of the theater. With beer. And chicks. And with enough beer even the nerdy girls started looking tapable.

By 12am the rest of my dorm caught wind of what was going on in the theater - does anything really remain a secret on a college campus? Not really.
So from 12am until roughly 3 the theater started crawling with every smartass who wanted to pull a prank. Finally, at 3am, and roughly 40 college drunk college kids in the theater with music blasting through the theater sound system, College Security showed up and we scattered.
Did we ever find out if the theater was haunted or if the graves were ever really there?
No.
But it's always been a great way to get a hot thespian chick alone in the theater at night.

Very true. Every Thespian I've known has been one horny little chica...Band chicks and Choir chicks are usually just as bad.

Thanks for sharing - especially the great stories!

I'd love to know what the song was on the first link and who the singer is. I'd love to use it with a slide show I'm doing for our little girl's grandmas.
