Subject: Why would decal be screwing up my graphics?
I start decal then launch AC and it comes up with the AC loggin but it's black and white, poor resolution, and huge. I can't even see half of the screen.

Everything works fine without decal.

Pentium 4, 2.4 GHz cpu w/ 512 MB of Ram
NVIDIA GeForce 6200, 256 MB, running at 375 MHz

Open your Decal panel, click "Export" lower right hand side. A new window will open up, select "Copy to Clipboard".

Bah, how are we supposed tell you what the problem is if we can only tell by looking at the export?

Anyway, from the export, video memory looks good which is the most common cause of video problems. Second most common cause is not having the latest video drivers, you might want to check that.

I don't see anything basically wrong with your export so these are just suggestions or rather some off the wall things you can try.

First, and formost, Does it do the same thing when you run decal without loading any plugins?

Second, It is xmas time buy yourself some more memory ( 512 system memory just doesn't rally cut it anymore). That 6200 some versions of it did use system memory, and you can't go wrong with more memory anyways.

Third, vidio drivers: a great source is guru 3d.

Fourth, and this is sorta really off the wall. net framework 1.0 with service pack: Delete them and redownload 1.1 http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyID=262d25e3-f589-4842-8157-034d1e7cf3a3&displaylang=en

There are a few issues that 1.0 with service pack has that the 1.1 total download does not have ( or so I've read). but you may not even be running anything that uses it but can't hurt to download it.

Do NOT delete the .NET 1.0 framework unless you plan on re-downloading it and installing it fresh.

Hazzmat: 1.1 is NOT an upgrade for 1.0. .NET 1.1 and .NET 1.0 are 2 different but similar products. Applications built using .NET 1.0 need the 1.0 framework in order to run. Same for 1.1 and 2.0 applications.

You're machine SHOULD have all 3 installed and fully updated.

"Bah, how are we supposed tell you what the problem is if we can only tell by looking at the export?"

The export contains only basic information about the status of key items needed to run decal.

When did we get exports anyways? I've used decal for years and I've never seen anything about needing exports. However long ago that was.

If it was a common problem somebody would have been able to look at the symptoms and tell me what was wrong. They wouldn't need the export for that. If it wasn't such a common problem, as is the case, the export doesn't contain enough info to be of any use. So why post it? I guess it helps rule out the easy fixes. It's kind of like those questions you get from the tech guy when your internet isn't working. I check the plugs and reboot everything before I even call them and then they make me do it all over again while I'm on the phone with them, like I don't have a clue. Hey, it's broke on your end dude.

All I can say is that before the last patch it was working fine. As far as I know, I haven't change anything with my system. Decal worked before without any glitches and now it doesn't.

Could something have crashed with my graphics card? Maybe a preset profile that isn't compatable with decal or something. I don't think I changed that but maybe. Any graphics filters or anything that should be checked? I did reinstall that recently along with my sound drivers. Although everything seems to be running fine with all that.

Could a virus or virus remover type program (AVG, Adaware, roguescan, smitfraud, etc) have possibly removed or corrupted a key support file that wouldn't have been reinstalled with decal?

Oh well, Thanks for your help folks.

The reason Techs on the phone ask you to do stuff is that they have no idea how smart you are when you call.

They have to treat each person as if they've never operated a computer before... because half of them haven't.

As for the export.. it contains actually quite a lot of information. Export has been part of Decal for at least a year now, possibly two (as I was the one who added them).

The reason for the export is to take a look at what plugins you have, what video card you have, what drivers you have, and what Decal specific information can be used to diagnose certain issues. It's mainly useful for Plugin support, but it is very beneficial to overal Decal support as well.

As for your problem, maybe you should update your graphics card and see if the updated drivers have any affect on it. I can't see anything right off that looks odd, but there is always something. We know Decal works as there are quite a lot of users who are using it flawlessly... but it's the people who aren't that we have to pay attention to and figure out the common thread in them.

Sometimes that takes time.

As a 'for instance'...

Without the export, I can tell that you probably have a video problem. I don't know if it's the card, the drivers, the card memory, a laptop computer (with it's own special needs) or maybe something really strange with your setup, ie Decal files out of date, etc.

With the export I was able to rule out just about everything. The only 'unknown' left was video driver.

Without the export we could have started playing a bunch of back and forth games about what you have installed, have not installed, brand of card, and on and on.

With the export we don't need any of that. We can look at it and quickly rule out lots of possibilities.

So even though the export did not tell us what was wrong, it DID tell us a whole bunch of possible stuff that wasn't wrong.

Thanks Drakier, I screwed up that framework post. In reviewing my notes I should have said that if netframework 1.1 was installed and also had the 1.1 hotfix then it would be better to uninstall both and re-install 1.1. seems te older hotfix wasnt a great fix.
